From 195 to 1954, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) was stationed in Gongbei area, and Yuyuan was once the seat of the Fifth Branch of the Frontier Defense Bureau of Guangdong People's Public Security Department. In March 1952, the Australian and Portuguese authorities invaded China across the border and a "gate-closing incident" occurred. It was only after China's stern negotiations that the Australian and Portuguese authorities changed their attitude and came to Yuyuan to negotiate with the People's Liberation Army. On August 23rd, they signed the apology book in Yuyuan and promised to compensate us for our losses. From 1954 to 1972, Yuyuan was the site of Qianshan Middle School (Gongbei Middle School before the Cultural Revolution and Avantgarde Middle School during the Cultural Revolution). In February 1972, the middle school was moved to Qianshan Town, and Yuyuan Garden was transferred to Zhuhai Second Light Industry Bureau as a plastic factory and a carton factory. Up to now, most of the original garden buildings have been rebuilt, and there are still about 19 meters of stone walls, as well as stone bridges, rockeries and workers' dormitories. In 1986, it was announced as a cultural relic protection unit in Zhuhai.
