The previous sentence of "The bell rings at midnight": "Hanshan Temple outside Gusu City".
This sentence comes from "Night Mooring at Maple Bridge" written by Zhang Ji in the Tang Dynasty.
The moon is setting, crows are crying, and the sky is filled with frost. Jiang Feng, fishing fire, is facing melancholy.
At Hanshan Temple outside Gusu City, the bell rang for the passenger ship at midnight.
Translation: The moon has set, the crows are crows and the sky is filled with cold air. I sleep sadly in front of the maple trees and fishing fires by the river.
In the lonely and quiet Hanshan Ancient Temple outside Gusu City, the sound of ringing bells in the middle of the night reached the passenger ship.
Notes: 1. Fengqiao: outside Changmen, Fengqiao Street, Huqiu District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province today.
Some people say, "Fengjiang was originally called Fengjiang in ancient times" and "Fengqiao was originally called Fengjiang." Others say, "This bridge was mistakenly called Fengjiang in the past, and it was only changed to Fengqiao by Wang Gui." Others say, "It was originally Fengjiang.
The bridge was sealed, and Wang Gui changed the title to Feng. People were frightened by the power and had no choice but to follow him."
2. Wu Tiao: One says it is the crow’s cry, and another says it is Wu Tiao Town.
3. The sky is covered with frost: the image of extremely cold air.
Frost cannot cover the sky. The word "frost" should be understood as severe cold.
4. Jiang Feng: Generally interpreted as "maple trees by the river", Jiang refers to the Wusong River, which originates from Taihu Lake, flows through Shanghai, and merges into the Yangtze River, commonly known as Suzhou River.
"Night Mooring at Maple Bridge" After appreciating the Anshi Rebellion in the Tang Dynasty, Zhang Ji wrote this traveling poem while passing by Hanshan Temple.
This poem accurately and delicately describes the observation and feelings of a passenger ship berthed at night on the late autumn night scene in the south of the Yangtze River. It outlines the sceneries such as the moonlight and crows, the frosty sky and cold night, the river maples and fishing fires, and the lonely boats and passengers.
In addition, this poem also fully expresses the author's thoughts about traveling, worries about home and country, and concerns about being in troubled times and not having a destination. It is a representative work of writing about sorrow.
The whole poem has vivid images that can be felt and painted, the logical relationship between sentences is very clear and reasonable, and the content is clear and easy to understand.
"Mooring at Maple Bridge at Night" is an ancient poem in which emotion and scenery are intertwined. Except for "Towards Sorrowful Sleep", the whole poem is a deliberate depiction of scenery.
It does not express one's feelings directly, but indirectly and naturally expresses the poet's depression and melancholy of loneliness during the journey by describing the beauty of the autumn river on a moonlit night.
If you want to express your emotions, you should first paint the scenery, and then your emotions will follow the scenery. This is the remarkable artistic feature of this ancient poem.
It can be seen that in ancient poems that use scenery to express emotions, the author's emotions are expressed through the scenery depicted.
When teaching this kind of ancient poetry, we must not only appreciate the scenery described by the author, but more importantly, understand his skill in expressing emotions through the scenery, so that we can truly understand the ancient poetry.
