Historical evolution

Gulou District has a long history, and it is one of the earliest developed areas in Nanjing. Many primitive villages existed five or six thousand years ago. Thirty-six years ago (333 years ago), after Chu Weiwang Xiong Shang defeated the Vietnamese army, he set up Jinling City in Shitoushan, which was the first administrative establishment in Gulou District and the beginning of the establishment of Nanjing City. In the thirty-seventh year of Qin Shihuang's victory in politics (in the first 21 years), the emperor began to patrol the east, passing through Jinling, changing Jinling City into Moling County, and adding Jiangcheng County. In the 16th year of Jian 'an of Emperor Xian of Han Dynasty (211), Sun Quan, the marquis of Wu, moved from Jingkou (now Zhenjiang) to Moling, and changed Moling to Jianye the following year. Jin's reconstruction industry was Moling, Jianye and Jiankang, which were all here in the Southern Dynasties. Sui and Tang dynasties reduced the political status of Jiankang, from county to state, and then to county, which was impermanent and changeable in name. From the 14th year of the Five Dynasties (917) to the end of the Qing Dynasty, the present district was always under the jurisdiction of Jiangning and Shangyuan counties. At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, the Nanjing City Wall was built, and the main part of the area was enclosed in the inner city, and the rest was also within the outer contour.

The construction of the Drum Tower began in March of the 22nd year of the Republic of China (1933), and it was called the sixth district of Nanjing. At that time, the area under its jurisdiction, south of hankou road and west of Caochangmen, was not in the current district. In 28 years of the Republic of China, the southern boundary of the puppet reform government was pushed to Hanzhong Road. In 34 years of the Republic of China, Xuanwu Lake area was included in the regional boundary, and the regional scope was expanded. After liberation, when the New Fifth District was established in 195, the east of Zhongyang Road and Xuanwu Lake were all set aside. In 196, when the people's commune was implemented, the urban area was surrounded by suburbs, and the Yanziji Town, Maigaoqiao Town, Xiaozhuang Farm and the small towns of Xiaguan People's Commune were placed under the jurisdiction of Gulou People's Commune.
