Food culture in Kota Kinabalu

KK is one of the few cities in Borneo that offers a variety of dining options.

Here you can eat a variety of Chinese, Indian, Malay, Japanese and Western cuisine.

amansutra (SEDCOSq; JIKampungAir4; meals RM3.50~8; lunch and dinner) Steel tables and counters sit on ordinary tile floors.

The food is delicious; recommend the sotodaging (a thick soup of lean beef and noodles).

Chatterbox Café (JIGaya; meals RM2.50~7; breakfast, lunch and dinner) Recharge your energy at this simple cafe located opposite the information center.

There are not many types of dishes on offer, mainly Indian cuisine. The signature dish is biryani (rice steamed with meat and vegetables on the stove).

It closes at 7pm most days.

YeeFung (JIGaya; meals RM3~6; breakfast and lunch) has a large number of regular customers, which proves the popularity of YeeFung’s cooking skills and joyful atmosphere among diners.

If you don't understand the menu, ask someone for help.

Anjungsenja (Meals RM3~7; Dinner) The tiled promenade area is sometimes very windy, but it does not detract from its beautiful atmosphere. The dining table faces the South China Sea.

There is a good food court upstairs in Central Market (JITunFuadStephen; meals RM2~6; lunch and dinner).

Little Italy (T: 232231, 23JlnHajiSaman, rm16-44) is located on the first floor of Capital Hotel and has long been popular with foreign immigrants and backpackers.

The price is relatively expensive, but it is more authentic Italian PIZZA and POSTA.

Night market (SedcoSq, JIKampungAir4) is the best night market in KK. It specializes in seafood, but also serves other dishes.

In addition, there is a small night market near the post office, and there are some small shops nearby to buy Sabah beef jerky.

There is a Filipino market next to the pier with excellent snacks and cheap seafood.

The market opens around 5pm and goes until midnight.

Special recommendation: Go to Anjung Samudera in Jln Tun Fuad Stephens near the sea in the evening. There is a row of open-air seaside cafes (such as EURO coffee, etc.), which are very comfortable. You can see the beautiful sunset and night view of the sea, taste coffee and Western food, and the prices are lower than ordinary ones.

Restaurants are even cheaper.
