Hunan University of Technology is a first-class institution. Hunan University of Technology is located in Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province. It was jointly established by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce and the People's Government of Hunan Province. It is a first-class discipline construction university in Hunan Province.

The school’s history can be traced back to Zhuzhou Normal School founded in 1958; Zhuzhou Basic University was founded in 1979 and renamed Zhuzhou Institute of Technology in 1989; in 2001 and 2004, Hunan Urban Construction School, Hunan The Provincial Accounting School was merged into Zhuzhou Institute of Technology; in February 2006, Zhuzhou Institute of Technology, Zhuzhou Normal College, and Hunan Metallurgical Vocational and Technical College merged and were upgraded to Hunan University of Technology.

In 1995, as one of the first batch of pilot institutions, the school took the lead in passing the undergraduate teaching qualification evaluation of the former State Education Commission. In 2003, the school was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a master's degree-granting unit. In 2008, it was rated as an excellent university for undergraduate teaching level evaluation by the Ministry of Education; in 2009, it was qualified to recruit foreign students; in 2010, it passed the quality evaluation of the master's training process with excellent results; in 2013, it was awarded the "National Graduate Award" "Top 50 Universities with Typical Employment Experience"; at the end of 2013, it obtained the enrollment rights of the "Doctoral Talent Training Project to Serve the National Special Needs", and began to recruit doctoral students in 2014.
