There is a big river in western Yunnan that runs through the whole province from north to south, named Lancang River.

Lancang River is also known as "the mother river of Pu 'er tea", and the overall terrain of Yunnan Province is "high in the north and low in the south". The middle and lower reaches of Lancang River have relatively low altitude, low latitude, abundant sunshine and fertile soil, and the natural conditions are extremely suitable for the growth of tea trees. Compared with other areas, it contains more tea, and the tea produced is more suitable for the production and processing of Pu 'er tea. Therefore, Pu 'er tea producing areas are mainly distributed in the middle and lower reaches of Lancang River.

Pu 'er tea has three main producing areas, from north to south, Lincang tea area, Pu 'er tea area and Banna tea area in turn.

In addition, there are some areas that produce a large amount of tea, such as Dehong, Dali and Baoshan, and some areas outside China also produce tea, such as Laos, Myanmar and Viet Nam.

Yunnan is rich in tea resources, and the middle and lower reaches of Lancang River are important areas for the origin and evolution of tea trees. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, due to the government's vigorous promotion of tea planting and tea processing, there are still a large number of cultivated ancient tea tree resources and ancient tea gardens. In addition, there are many wild tea trees and transitional ancient tea trees.

At present, in Yunnan Province, tea trees planted before the Qing Dynasty with a tree age of more than 1.20 years account for 2% of the tea planting area in the province. These tea trees are what we now call ancient tea trees.

Most of the tea trees planted in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China were between 70- 120, accounting for 5% of the tea planting area in the province.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China (1949), tea trees were planted the most in the 1990s, accounting for more than 90% of the total tea garden area in the province.

The pollution-free tea garden planted and transformed in the 1990s covers an area of 5.2 million mu, with a certified area of 800,000 mu and a yield of only 654.38+10,000 tons.

According to the statistics of Yunnan Provincial Department of Agriculture, in 20 16 years, the tea picking area in Yunnan Province reached 5.75 million mu, and the output of Yunnan Pu 'er tea reached130,000 tons, of which 70% were ancient teas over 100 years old, and the output was about100,000 tons.

Due to its late development, the tea area has reserved a large number of original ecological and pollution-free growth environments for ancient tea trees, and it is the area with the largest output of Pu 'er tea. The total area of tea gardens is 6.5438+0.3 million mu, including 400,000 mu of wild ancient tea gardens and 650,000 mu of cultivated ancient tea gardens. It is the cradle of ancient tea trees in the world, with a thousand years of age, the highest in Shanghai and the largest area. Two of the three national fine varieties (Mengku big leaf species, Menghai big leaf species and Fengqing big leaf species) in Yunnan Province originated from Lincang.

The most famous tea areas in Lincang are Iceland Village in Mengku Town of Shuangjiang County and Xigui Village in Linxiang District.
