According to geographic distribution and ecological characteristics, the various species of the genus Vitis are generally divided into three major populations, namely, the Eurasian population, the East Asian population and the North American population.
(1) Eurasian population
that is, the countries commonly known as the European species, in fact, this species not only originated in Europe, but also in Asia, so in our country renamed the Eurasian species. Most of the world-famous fresh and processed varieties belong to this species, such as Rizamat, Yafusa, white chicken heart, late red, Christmas rose, Moldova and so on.
(2) East Asian populations
There are more than 40 species, more than 10 species native to China, such as mountain grapes.
(3) North American Population
There are about 28 species, mostly distributed in the eastern part of North America. There are mainly American species, riverbank grapes, sand grapes, etc. that are utilized in economic cultivation. Now, the pure American species has been rarely cultivated, through artificial long-term repeated hybridization has produced a large number of European and American hybrids, such as the Jumbo variety.
