The upper part is cylindrical with lanceolate lobes. The achenes are black and purple, hairless, with a long beak on the upper end and 2-3 sharp spines. The flowering period is from June to August, and the fruiting period is from September to October.

This famous ornamental plant is native to America and Mexico. It is widely cultivated in China and often grows spontaneously on roadsides, field ridges and stream banks. There are large areas of naturalization in Yunnan and western Sichuan, with altitudes up to 2,700 meters.
