The properties and flavors of Chai Hu are bitter and slightly cold. Attributed to the liver and gallbladder meridian.
Functions and Indications: To relieve the epidermis and the interior, to relieve the liver, and to elevate the yang. It is used for cold and fever, cold and heat, chest and hypochondriac distension and pain, menstrual disorders, ZiGuan prolapse, prolapse of anus.
Applications 1. For cold and heat exchanges, cold and fever. It is often used in conjunction with Scutellaria baicalensis and Pinellia ternata for treating evil in Shaoyang and exchanges of cold and heat; and with Pueraria lobata, Gypsum and Scutellaria baicalensis for treating cold and fever. 2. It is used in treating liver qi stagnation, pain in coercion and ribs, and menstrual disorders. It is used with Angelica sinensis, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Radix et Rhizoma Cyperiatae and Rhizoma Polygoni Multiflori. 3. For qi deficiency, prolonged diarrhea and prolapse of anus, and uterine prolapse. It is used with Radix Codonopsis pilosulae, Radix Astragali, Radix et Rhizoma Aspergilli, and so on. Precautions Liver yang upward hyperactivity, liver wind internal mobilization, yin deficiency and fire and qi upward reversal of the person to be avoided or used with caution.
