Popular allusion story: In the Spring and Autumn Period, there lived a father and a son, both of whom were disciples of Confucius. His father, Zeng Zhe, loved eating jujubes (a wild fruit commonly known as milk persimmon); his son Zeng Shen was a filial son, but after his father's death, he couldn't bear to eat jujubes. This incident was widely praised by Confucian disciples at that time.
During the Warring States Period, Gongsun Chou, a disciple of Mencius, could not understand this matter, so he went to ask his teacher Mencius for advice. Gongsun Chou asked: "Teacher, which one is more delicious, water chestnuts or lamb dates?"
"Of course water chestnuts are delicious, there is no one who doesn't like eating water chestnuts!" Gongsun Chou asked again: " Since zhizi is delicious, then Zeng Shen and his father also like to eat zhizi, so why doesn’t Zeng Shen stop eating zhizi and only eat lamb dates? "
Mencius replied: "Braised" Everyone likes to eat roasted dates; although the taste of lamb dates is not as good as that of braised roasted dates, it is Zeng Zhe's favorite food, so Zeng Shen only abstains from eating lamb dates, just like he is taboo about calling his elders by their names. They have the same last name, but their names are unique to them."
