Egg fruit (scientific name: Passiflora edulia Sims), also known as passion fruit, is a herbaceous vine of the genus Passiflora in the Passifloraceae family, ca. 6 m long; stems finely striped, glabrous; petals 5, as long as the sepals; light green at base, purple in the middle, white at the top, berry ovoid, 3-4 cm in diameter, glabrous, purple when ripe; seeds numerous, ovate. Flowering in June, fruiting in November.
