In the small-displacement turbocharging is in the ascendant now, even though small displacement although it can squeeze out its own more than double or even more than twice the displacement of naturally aspirated horsepower, the declaration of displacement is justice has never disappeared. However, small displacement is still the future trend, in order to explore the possibility of future powerful power, many car manufacturers launched their own high-performance small-displacement models. Let's take a look.
Renault's Alpine? The A110 is a classic mid-rear-drive small sports car that was launched in the 1960s and had a stellar track record in rallying and endurance racing. For various reasons, the Alpine faded into obscurity in the 1990s. Then Renault resurrected the alpine brand, and the first one to be resurrected was this A110.
I'm sorry to say that the Alpine?A110 is the largest displacement and least powerful of the bunch. It's powered by a 1.8T turbocharged engine that's up to 2.0T levels, with 252bhp and 320Nm of torque, and since the Alpine?A110's overall mass is just 1,080kg, it accelerates from 0-100km/h in just 4.5 seconds.
While it's true that the French are good at making small cars that handle well, the Alpine?A110 is arguably the only remaining presence in the small sports car segment. And for 58,500 euros (about Rs 440,000) you get a mid-rear-drive small sports car, which isn't too outrageous. In 2017, insiders at Dongfeng Renault revealed that the Alpine brand would enter China in the future and launch a four-seat version of the A110 for the Chinese market, but given the French car's recent market performance, the Chinese are going to miss out on this fun little sports car.
Jeremy Clarkson, host of "The Grand Tour," didn't hide his love for the Alfa Romeo 4C. And while the elfin sports car has a displacement of just 1.75L, it sells for a whopping $1.1 million domestically. There's a used 4C at the Auto Mall just outside the professor's company, and it too has a $880,000 price tag.
This Alfa Romeo 4C's engine displacement is only 1.75L, but it has a maximum power of 240 horsepower and a maximum torque of 350 Nm, which is comparable to the parameters of a number of 2.0T engines, and it accelerates to 100 kilometers in just 4.5 seconds.
Why does this little sports car with a small displacement accelerate quickly? And at an expensive price? That's because the Alfa Romeo 4C uses a carbon fiber monocoque body, which is strong, reliable, lightweight and safe, and the Alfa Romeo 4C's monocoque weighs only 65 kilograms, just the weight of a grown man. However, this monocoque is extremely expensive to build, so even though the Alfa Romeo 4C is priced so high, it is still the cheapest carbon fiber monocoque sports car.
The Alfa Romeo 4C carries out the Italian understanding of racing, with a mid-rear drive layout, a body weight of only 895 kilograms, an extremely low center of gravity, and a transmission tuned to pursue only the quick neglect of shift smoothness. To put it bluntly, it is a closed kart.
The BMW i series of models are among the very ahead of their time. The BMW i8 was unveiled in Frankfurt in 2013 and in China in 2014, and so far the technology does not seem to have lagged behind. The BMW i8 is equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, in which the 1.5T turbocharged engine alone boasts a maximum power of 231 horsepower, and so far no 1.5T has been able to surpass it. The hybrid system used in the BMW i8 is a bit unusual in that there is no connection between the two. The front wheels are driven by a 96kW electric motor + two-stage gearbox, while the rear wheels are driven by a gasoline engine + 6AT gearbox.
This hybrid system of BMW i8 doesn't pursue high horsepower and long range, but rather achieves a moderate balance between weight and power. 2014 i8 battery is only 7.1kW-h, and the electric motor adopts a small 96kW electric motor, so the BMW i8 is able to achieve a weight of 1,540kg, which belongs to the relatively rare car weight. It accelerates to 100 kilometers in just 4.4 seconds.
Jaguar's C-X75, which commemorates Jaguar's 75th anniversary, originally boasted a production run of 250 units, but due to the economic crisis, the car's production plans were put on hold. Jaguar fans don't have to worry too much, though, as it was featured in a spectacular chase with Aston Martin on "James Bond: Ghostbusters.
As originally envisioned, the C-X75 featured a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, which could produce a combined maximum power of 850 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque. The 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder engine is no weakling either, with a full 502bhp on tap.
The C-X75 can accelerate from 0-100km/h in less than three seconds, and has a top speed of 354km/h.
Though plans for the C-X75's production have been put on hold, there are still five prototypes in existence, with three of these going to collectors through auctions. in the bag, one as a promotional car and one as a filming car for "James Bond: Ghostbusters". The powertrain is said to be expected in the next-generation F-TYPE. If that's true, it wouldn't be a bad way to bury the C-X75 powertrain.
How much horsepower can a 1.6T turbocharged engine make? If the Jaguar C-X75's 500 horsepower just now has already refreshed your perception, the 1.6T in the AMG?ONE will do it again. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the AMG division, AMG launched the AMG?ONE supercar in 2017, which uses the same specification 1.6T turbocharged engine as the F1 one, and although the engine's horsepower has been downgraded, it is still conservatively estimated to be more than 700 hp, and with the assistance of the four electric motors, the powertrain already has more than 1,000 hp.
The horsepower was reduced in order to extend the life of the engine. This engine in the AMG?ONE is said to last up to 50,000 kilometers. Don't think I'm being ironic, because at the time, F1 engines were designed to last only 5,000 kilometers. Of course, 50,000 kilometers is on the low side of the life span, if? the average buyer is allowed to buy an AMG?ONE, it must be cursed.
It's a good thing the AMG?ONE's buyers aren't ordinary people, either, because the whopping €2.275 million price tag already leaves out most grocery-car buyers, and also the fact that the AMG?ONE will only be produced in 275 units.
As you can see from the models above, small-displacement models can have the horsepower of their larger counterparts through technological innovation. From the technological direction of the C-X75 and AMG?ONE, it is clear that small-displacement hybrids are the future of sports cars.
