Traditional Chinese medicine divides cough into 7 categories according to different causes. According to different types of cough, we need to choose different treatment methods and corresponding drugs to achieve curative effect.

Common cold's lung syndrome

Manifestations: Cough, shortness of breath, or choking cough, itchy throat, sudden or aggravated by cold air, peculiar smell and other factors, or cough drama in the morning at night, mostly recurrent, dry cough without phlegm or less phlegm. The tongue coating is thin and white, and the pulse is floating, tight or string.

Common symptoms: upper respiratory tract infection, acute and chronic bronchitis, whooping cough, etc.

Treatment: dispersing wind and dispersing lung, relieving cough and resolving phlegm.

Commonly used Chinese patent medicines: Zhisou Oral Liquid, Suhuang Zhike Capsule, Ganmao Zhike Granule, Xuanfei Zhike Granule, etc.

Syndrome of wind-cold attacking lung

Manifestations: long cough, aggravated by wind or cold, a small amount of white and thin phlegm, heavy cough, frothy sputum, wheezing and coughing, shortness of breath, headache, aversion to cold, no sweat and other symptoms, night cough, dry mouth. The tongue is pale, the coating is white or slippery, and the pulse is tight or floating.

Treatment: relieving exterior syndrome, dispelling cold, warming lung and resolving yin.

Common symptoms: acute attack of chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, senile emphysema, etc.

Commonly used Chinese patent medicines: Tongxuan Lifei Pill, Zhike Ningsou Capsule, Fenghan Cough Granule, Xiaoqinglong Mixture, etc.

Syndrome of wind-heat invading lung

Symptoms: cough for a long time, dry mouth, dry throat, more cough every day, cough when eating spicy and hot products, and a small amount of white sticky phlegm. The tongue is red, the coating is thin and yellow, and the pulse string number or string.

Treatment: dispelling wind and clearing heat, dispersing lung and relieving cough.

Common diseases: cold, flu, acute bronchitis, acute tonsillitis, etc.

Commonly used Chinese patent medicines: Sangju Ganmao Granule, Shedan Chuanbei Pipa Dew, Niuhuang Shedan Chuanbei Powder and Jizhi Syrup.

Syndrome of lung injury caused by wind dryness

Manifestations: cough, scanty phlegm, dry mouth, dry throat, dry nose, itchy nose, dry stool and severe cough at night. Pale red tongue, scanty fluid, and thready pulse.

Treatment: dispelling wind and clearing heat, dispersing lung and relieving cough.

Common symptoms: upper respiratory tract infection, acute bronchitis, bronchiectasis hemoptysis, whooping cough, etc.

Commonly used Chinese patent medicines: Qiuli Runfei Ointment, Chuanbei Pipa Syrup, Shedan Chuanbei Pipa Ointment, Ermu Ningsou Pill and Honey-refined Chuanbei Pipa Ointment.

Syndrome of phlegm-dampness accumulating in lung

Manifestations: heavy and turbid cough, multi-colored and white sputum, especially in the morning, chest tightness and fullness, and less appetite. The tongue coating is white and greasy and the pulse is slippery.

Treatment: strengthen the spleen, eliminate dampness, resolve phlegm and relieve cough.

Common symptoms: acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive emphysema and emphysema.

Commonly used Chinese patent medicines: Juhong Tanke Liquid, Gui Long Kechuanning Tablet and Erchen Pill.

Syndrome of phlegm-heat stagnation of lung

Common symptoms: chronic pharyngitis, chronic bronchitis, etc.

Treatment: nourishing yin, moistening lung, resolving phlegm and relieving cough.
