The fish has three dorsal fins, two anal fins, long chin tentacles, brown or gray dorsally, white ventrally, 37-57 soft dorsal fins; 31-42 soft anal fins, and a body length of up to 119 cm. It inhabits continental shelters and continental slopes and is carnivorous, feeding on fish, octopus, crustaceans, etc. It is a food fish of high economic value.
Distributed in North Korea, the northern Bering Strait, the Gulf of Alaska and the U.S. Los Angeles Sea area. In Japan, it is a cold-water marine fish from Hokkaido south to Sanin Prefecture on the west coast of Honshu Island and the central part of the east coast, as well as from the Yellow Sea north to the Bohai Sea and the mouth of the Yalu River, etc. It lives at altitudes ranging from -2.5 meters to +4.5 meters. Its survival altitude range is -238 to -15 meters.
