The Mutiny at Honnoji Temple took place in the early morning hours of June 2, Tensho 10 (June 21, 1582 A.D.) in Japan.
Oda Nobunaga's right-hand man, Akechi Mitsuhide, rose up in rebellion at the Honnoji Temple in Kyoto and killed his lord, Nobunaga. The history of Japan was thus rewritten. The Mutiny at Honnoji Temple was the largest and most famous coup in Japanese history.
Oda Nobunaga's defeat of Takeda Katsuyori in 1575 led to a multiplication of the "world's military forces". In particular, in 1580, when Honganji Temple left Osaka under the imperial edict of the Emperor, Nobunaga had almost completely pacified all of Kinki, with Kyoto at its center. After that, Nobunaga carried out a succession of cabinet reforms, the first to be dismissed being Nobunaga's father and son, Nobunori Sakuma, who had the largest army under Nobunaga's command.
Nobunaga wrote nineteen charges against Nobunaga, banished Nobunaga to Mount Takano, and then expelled several of his oldest retainers, who were followed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Akechi Mitsuhide, who were loyal to Oda Nobunaga. They were faithful practitioners of Oda Nobunaga's policies and tactics. On the other hand, many of the other retainers, seeing that their lord was making such drastic reforms and fearing that they too would become fish in the cauldron, raised their banners in revolt.
There are various theories about Akechi Mitsuhide's motives for the revolt. For example, there is no unanimous opinion about his resentment against Nobunaga, his ambition to take over the world, and his guardianship of the imperial court.
The incident at Honnouji Temple started suddenly, and could not find any record of Akechi Mitsuhide himself appearing at Honnouji Temple or Nijo Castle, Akechi Mitsuhide in the end there is no black hand behind the scenes, who should be responsible for the death of Oda Nobunaga, has been the focus of research, and there are even some people in Japan who believe that Mitsuhide is unfairly charged with regicide and formed the "Akechi Mitsuhide Public Appreciation Society," which specializes in redressing the grievances for Akechi Mitsuhide.
