About the Ghost Festival

The Hungry Ghost Festival, also known as the "July Festival" or the Bon Festival, is one of the three major ghost festivals.

The fifteenth day of the first lunar month is called the Shangyuan Festival by the Han people. The Lantern Festival has existed since ancient times; the Han people call it the Zhongyuan Festival on July 15th, when they worship their ancestors; the Han people call it the Xiayuan Festival on October 15th, when they eat cold food and commemorate the sages.

The ancestor worship festival falls on the lunar calendar. The 15th day of the seventh month is called "July 15th", when midsummer has passed and autumn has just begun. Folks believe that ancestors will return home to visit their descendants at this time, so the ceremony of worshiping ancestors is general. It is held in the evening before the end of July, and is not limited to a specific day. On ordinary days, ancestors are worshipped, and the ancestors' tablets are usually left untouched. The tablets are taken out one by one and placed respectfully on the altar table specially used for worship. Then incense is placed in front of each ancestor's tablet. Tea and rice are served three times every day in the morning, afternoon and evening until the seventh day of the week. It will be sent back on the 30th of the month.
