Summer and fall whole grass, sun-dried.
Physiological properties
Annual herb, 40-70 cm high. Stem erect, multi-branched, glabrous, nodes expanded. Leaves lanceolate or elliptic-lanceolate, 4-8 cm long, 0.5-2.5 cm wide, apical acuminate, base cuneate, margin entire, ciliate, both surfaces glabrous, covered with brown dots, sometimes with hispidulous hairs along the midvein, pungent, leaf axils with closed fertilized flowers; petiole 4-8 mm long; ocrea cylindrical, membranous, brown, 1-1.5 cm long, sparsely hispidulous hairs, truncated at the top, ciliolate. hairs, usually harboring flower clusters within the ocrea.
Racemes spikelike, terminal or axillary, 3-8 cm long, usually pendulous, sparsely flowered, interrupted proximally; bracts funnelform, 2-3 mm long, green, margins membranous, sparsely ciliolate, each bract 3-5-flowered; pedicels longer than bracts; perianth 5-parted, sparsely 4-parted, green, white or reddish distally, yellow-brown pellucid glandular dotted, tepals elliptic, 3-3.5 mm long. perianth segments elliptic, 3-3.5 mm long; stamens 5-8; pistil 1, style 2-3-lobed. Achenes ovate, flattened, rarely 3-angled, 2.5 mm long, surface with small dots, black without light, enclosed in persistent perianth. Flowering period July to August.
Growth and environment
Distributed in China's north and south provinces. It grows on riverbanks, gullies, and wetlands in valleys, at an altitude of 50-3500 meters.
Herbal properties
Stem cylindrical, branched, 30-70cm long; surface gray-brown or brownish-red, with fine ribs, nodes expanded; brittle, easy to fracture, cross-section light yellow, hollow. Leaves alternate, stalked; leaf blade crumpled or broken, complete ones lanceolate when flattened, 5-10cm long, 0.7-1.5cm wide, apex acuminate, base cuneate, entire, upper surface brownish-brown, lower surface brownish-green, brownish-black pigmented dots and minute glandular dots on both surfaces; ocrea cylindrical, 0.8-1.1cm long, purplish-brown, ciliate 1-3mm long; racemose spikes 4-10cm long, with a few sparse intermittent clusters; flowers in clusters. Raceme-like spikes 4-10cm long, flower clusters sparsely interrupted; perianth light green, 5-lobed, densely glandular. Slight gas, taste pungent, spicy.
