Place a deep-bottomed glass in the freezer (optional). Whether you use a deep-bottomed glass or a regular metal cup, placing it in the freezer for a few minutes will give the milkshake an icy texture.2

Soften the ice cream. Using ice cream straight out of the freezer can make a milkshake taste flat and cold. If you let the ice cream sit on the counter for 10 minutes and wait until it begins to melt around the perimeter, you'll get a better tasting shake.3

Mix the ingredients. Add two heaping scoops of softened ice cream or frozen yogurt to a blender or milkshake maker, or a large stainless steel bowl if you don't have a blender. Add 60 ml of milk if you prefer a creamy flavored shake, or 240 ml of milk if you prefer a thicker shake.4

Blend. The easiest way to blend is with a blender or milkshake maker, or a handheld blender stick if you don't have one. If you don't have any of the above appliances, then take the extra effort to blend it manually.5

Pour into a chilled glass. Taste it beforehand and add ice cream if the flavor is too light, or milk if it's too heavy. You can also top the shake with a dollop of whipped cream, or sprinkle some chocolate chips, or refer to the guide below to make a variety of other flavors.
