Grimm's Fairy Tales

About the authors: The Brothers Grimm,

Jacob Grimm (1785-1863)

Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859)

They were both collectors and compilers of German folklore. They came from official families, both studied law at the University of Marburg, and both worked in the Kassel Library and were professors at the University of G?ttingen, and both became members of the Grimm Academy of Sciences in 1841. Both of them **** compiled the "Collection of Fairy Tales for Children and Families" (the last edition of which was published in 1857, **** 216 stories). Among them, "Cinderella", "Snow White", "Little Red Riding Hood", "The Brave Little Tailor" ...... and other famous stories have become the favorite masterpieces of children all over the world. In addition, the Brothers Grimm began to collect German folklore from 1808 and published two volumes of German Legends, ****585 pieces. They also wrote academic works such as German Grammar (1819-1837), History of the German Language (1848) and the first four volumes of the German Dictionary (1852), contributing to the development of Germanic linguistics.

Living in 19th-century Germany were the Grimm brothers, linguists and researchers of ancient cultures. While attending university, the two met the Heidelberg Romantic poets Brentano and Arnim, who inspired the brothers by collecting and organizing a collection of German folk songs called "The Boy's Magical Horn". Later, these two brothers visited good fairy tale tellers in Hesse and Main and collected stories from their mouths, which amounted to more than a hundred in a few years.

In 1812, these stories were collected into the first volume of "A Collection of Fairy Tales for Children and Families," which appeared in Berlin on Christmas Eve and was a huge hit. Thereafter, until 1857, the Brothers Grimm continued to add to the stories and revised them again and again, *** releasing seven editions. The seventh edition later became the original version circulated in various countries, and has since been translated into dozens of languages, with many of the stories being widely circulated.

As early as 1925, there was a domestic translation of Grimm's Fairy Tales, compiled by the Compilation Division of the then Henan Education Department, which contained 10 stories, such as The Snow Maiden and The Six Servants, titled Grimm's Fairy Tales, translated by Wang Shao Ming. After that, the famous Zhao Jing Shen had also translated into "Gerem Fairy Tales", including "The Raven" and other 6 stories, published by Shanghai Chongwen Bookstore, but the date is no longer available.

How many stories were collected in Grimm's Fairy Tales***, according to different accounts, some said 216, some said 211. 1934, the Commercial Press released Wei Yixin's translation --- Wei is a famous translator, who translated Min Haosheng's Strange Journey and other works. This translation **** two books, according to Germany, Leipzig, "German masterpiece series" translated, containing 210, the book before the Grimm Brothers biography of an article called "Grimm's Fairy Tales".

This edition was the most complete translation before the liberation of China, and was highly praised after its publication. After the founding of New China, the Shanghai Children's and Teenagers' Publishing House and the People's Literature Publishing House reprinted it in 1956 and 1959, respectively, and the Humanities Society has reprinted it ever since, releasing it last year in a series of "Famous Translated and Illustrated Fairy Tales".

Another noteworthy edition is Yang Wuneng's translation, published by Guangxi Normal University Press in 2003, which was earlier released by Yilin Publishing House in 1993, and later included in the collection of Yang Wuneng's translations by Guangxi Normal University Publishing House, which contains 206 stories. Yang Wuneng has translated a number of works by Schiller, Goethe and others, and is a famous translator from German.
