The 31st World University Summer Games are held from July 28 to August 8, 2023 in Chengdu. The Opening Ceremony was held at 20:00 on July 28 at the Main Stadium of Dong'an Lake Sports Park, and the Closing Ceremony was held at 20:00 on August 8 at the Chengdu Open Air Music Park.

The 31st World University Summer Games was originally scheduled to be held from August 8 to 19, 2021 in Chengdu. After consultation and confirmation between the Organizing Committee of the 31st World University Summer Games 2021 and FISU, it was finally decided to postpone the date of the event by 8 days and hold it in Chengdu from August 16 to 27, 2021, with full consideration of the holiday arrangements of university students from various countries and the schedules of relevant important international events.

Chengdu World University Universiade refers to the 31st World University Summer Games, following the 2001 Beijing World University Summer Games, the 2009 Harbin World University Winter Games, and the 2011 Shenzhen World University Summer Games, 2017 Taipei World University Summer Games, China's fifth and mainland China's fourth World University Games, and the first time that western China has hosted a world comprehensive games.

The Chengdu Universiade was originally scheduled to be held from August 18 to 29, 2021, and was postponed to June 26 to July 7, 2022, due to the global epidemic situation.

On January 20, 2023, the delegation of the Chengdu Universiade sent New Year's invitations to university sports associations in 136 countries or regions.
