Yuanmingyuan is a large-scale imperial garden in China in the Qing Dynasty. It is located in Haidian District, Beijing. It was built in 1707 (forty-six years of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty). It consists of Yuanmingyuan and its attached gardens, Changchun Garden and Qichun Garden (later renamed Wanchun Garden). It is also called Yuanming Three Gardens, and is known as the "Garden of Ten Thousand Gardens". The Qing emperor came here every summer to escape the heat and listen to politics, so Yuanmingyuan is also called "Summer Palace".

Yuanmingyuan was built in 1707 (the 46th year of Kangxi), covering an area of 3.5 square kilometers, with a building area of 200,000 square meters, with more than 150 scenic spots. It was originally given to Yin Zhen, the fourth son of Emperor Kangxi. Kangxi inscribed "Yuanmingyuan" for it, and "Yuanming" was the name of Yongzheng. 1722 After Yongzheng acceded to the throne, the original Garden was expanded, and the Zhengda Guangming Hall, Qinzheng Hall and many value rooms of the Cabinet, Sixth Department and military department were built in the south of the Garden, in order to "avoid the noise and listen to politics" here in summer.
During the reign of Emperor Qianlong, in addition to the partial addition and reconstruction of Yuanmingyuan, Changchun Garden was built in the immediate east and merged into Wanchun Garden in the southeast. At this point, the pattern of Yuanmingyuan was basically formed, and many repairs and expansions were carried out during Jiaqing and Daoguang years.
