(1) Cowpea in autumn should be selected as early and medium-maturing varieties which are more resistant to heat, such as red-beaked swallows and white dew cowpeas.
(2) Autumn cowpea cultivation should choose cool places and make deep ditches and high compartments to facilitate drainage.
(3) Choose a suitable sowing period. Summer sowing of red-billed swallow cowpea, 50 to 60 days can start harvesting. In Chongqing area, the sowing period can be from the middle or late May to the end of June row sowing, in this range, early sowing has high yield. The suitable sowing period for autumn cowpea in Chengdu area is around the summer solstice and harvested around the fall equinox.
(4) Autumn cowpea can be direct seeded without seedlings. The spacing between plants can be denser than those sown in spring, and if the soil is dry, the seeds should be watered before sowing to facilitate germination. After sowing, it should be covered with hulls, straw and so on, avoiding heavy rain to beat the soil, keeping the soil moist, removing the straw and other coverings immediately after the emergence of seedlings, so as to avoid the plant growing in vain, and if there is a lack of seedlings, they should be replenished immediately.
(5) Autumn cowpea pre-growth is encountering high temperature, the soil is dry, should pay attention to irrigation, keep the soil moist. If there is too much rain, attention should be paid to removing soil water, and rust disease often occurs in cowpea in fall should be paid attention to prevention and control.
