my country first introduced Cambodian small-leaf species in 1947 by returned overseas Chinese Wang Yuwen and tried planting them in Jiachao Village, Wenquan Township, Qionghai City, Hainan. In 1951, Zheng Hongshu, a returned overseas Chinese, introduced large-leaf varieties from Malaysia and tried planting them in Tayang Town, Qionghai City, Hainan, and achieved success. Since then, my country's pepper production has experienced several ups and downs and has developed greatly. The main pepper producing areas in my country are Hainan Province, followed by Zhanjiang and Chaoshan areas in Guangdong. It is also cultivated in the southern parts of provinces and autonomous regions such as Yunnan, Fujian and Guangxi. In 2002, the national pepper planting area was approximately 28,790 hm2, and the total output was approximately 28,800 tons. Among them, Hainan Province, the main producing area, has a planting area of ??25,370 hm2 and a total output of 25,100 tons; Guangdong Province has a planting area of ??3,040 hm2 and a total output of about 3,400 tons; Yunnan Province has a planting area of ??0,380 hm2 and a total output of about 0,300 tons.
