Stinky tofu originated in the Qing Dynasty in the eighth year of the Kangxi period (1669), due to the Empress Dowager Cixi gave the name: Qing Fang. It is believed that the Empress Dowager Cixi loved to eat stinky tofu from Shaoxing and used it as an imperial dish. Stinky tofu has evolved into many versions, including the old Shaoxing stinky tofu, the famous Changsha stinky tofu, the Taiwan stinky tofu, and the Beijing stinky tofu.
