Schizonepeta means richness, happiness, bumper harvest, bumper harvest and reunion. Schizonepeta tenuifolia is the dry aerial part of Schizonepeta tenuifolia. Schizonepeta tenuifolia is mild, pungent, and enters the lung and liver meridians; Schizonepeta charcoal is mild in nature, pungent and astringent in taste, and enters the lung and liver meridians. The chemical constituents of Schizonepeta tenuifolia and Schizonepeta tenuifolia charcoal include volatile oil, flavonoids, triterpenoids, monoterpenes, organic acids, steroids and so on. The volatile oil is the main component.

People's Republic of China (PRC) Pharmacopoeia (20 15 edition) stipulates that the content of volatile oil in dried Schizonepeta tenuifolia should not be less than 0.60%(ml/g) and that of piperidone should not be less than 0.020%. The content of volatile oil and humulone in dried Schizonepeta tenuifolia pieces should not be less than 0.30%(ml/g) and 0.020% respectively.

Efficacy and function of Schizonepeta tenuifolia;

Schizonepeta tenuifolia has the effects of relieving exterior syndrome, expelling wind, penetrating rash and eliminating sores. Schizonepeta charcoal has astringent and hemostatic effects. Modern research shows that Schizonepeta tenuifolia has antipyretic, sweating, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-pathogenic microorganisms, anti-tumor, hemostasis, relaxation of tracheal smooth muscle and so on.

Schizonepeta tenuifolia can be used to treat common cold, headache, dizziness, sore throat, rubella, measles, initial sore poison, etc. Schizonepeta charcoal can be used to treat hematochezia, hemorrhoids, metrorrhagia, hematemesis, epistaxis, postpartum blood halo, etc.
