What's the difference between black wolfberry and red wolfberry?
Difference: There are differences in nutrition and active ingredients.

Taking100g dried fruit as an example, both Lycium barbarum L. and Lycium barbarum L. contain Lycium barbarum polysaccharide, and Lycium barbarum L. with red fruit is twice as much as Lycium barbarum L. with black fruit. The carotenoid content of red fruit Lycium barbarum reaches 40 1.53mg/ 100g, while black fruit Lycium barbarum contains almost no carotenoid. The content of betaine in Lycium barbarum L. is 30% higher than that in Lycium barbarum L., and the contents of vitamin C, zinc and iron are 2 times, 2 times and 4 times higher than that in Lycium barbarum L., and its anthocyanin content is 2.97% (dried fruit), which is the highest variety found at present. The chemical structure of anthocyanin is different from that of common fruit and vegetable materials.

In terms of efficacy, Lycium barbarum polysaccharide and carotenoid, the active components in Lycium barbarum fruit, have the functions of nourishing liver, improving eyesight and improving human immunity. In cooperation with Ningxia Medical University and Nanjing Agricultural University, the researchers of Lycium barbarum Center carried out antioxidant tests such as the protection of anthocyanins against oxidative damage of vascular endothelial cells in vitro.

The results showed that the antioxidant protective effect of anthocyanin extract from Lycium ruthenicum Thunb was significantly higher than that of anthocyanins from grapes, raspberries, purple cabbage, blueberries and purple potatoes. Anthocyanins and other polyphenols protected vascular endothelial cells from oxidative damage, which was one of the main mechanisms to prevent cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. Therefore, Lycium ruthenicum can be used as a potential development resource of food with good antioxidant damage function.

Extended data:

In order to protect wild resources, the researchers of Lycium barbarum Center collected 17 germplasm materials from 26 producing areas in China, such as Qinghai, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Gansu and Ningxia, and studied their botanical characters, chemical composition and structure, and the content differences of polyphenols such as anthocyanins.

Through analysis and research, 13 polyphenol compounds were preliminarily identified, among which 6 new compounds were found from Lycium barbarum for the first time. In order to develop and utilize Lycium barbarum resources, the central researchers used the collected germplasm materials to select new varieties of Lycium barbarum, and re-selected a new superior line 12-0 1 with high anthocyanin content, good disease resistance, self-compatibility and high yield from nearly 20 hybrid superior lines. Under the condition of artificial planting, the average yield of dried fruit per mu of three-year-old trees reached 10.

The successful cultivation of this new strain has a good supporting role for the development and utilization of Lycium barbarum and the realization of large-scale artificial planting.
