Apricot tree pruning time
Apricot trees grow vigorously and can be pruned all year round, but the focus is different. Pruning is more suitable in May-June, which is beneficial to later growth.
Almond trees can also grow slowly in winter, with little impact on the plant itself. The main purpose of pruning an almond tree is to adjust the tree's vigor and extend the fruiting period as much as possible.
Methods for pruning apricot trees
1. Young tree stage:
If the apricot trees are weak in growth, they should be cut short. Cut off overly dense branches and thin branches, and keep the strong branches. Pruning can reduce nutrient consumption, and the retained nutrients can promote later growth.
2. Fruit expansion period:
During the fruit expansion period, apricot trees need to core their new shoots multiple times to promote the growth of more side branches and increase internal ventilation and light transmission. It can also increase fruit setting rate and yield.
3. Fruiting period:
The apricot tree should be pruned according to the specific conditions of the branches, and the strong branches should be retained. Weak branches and side branches should be retracted at this position to restore growth momentum and promote the production of strong branches to achieve the purpose of increasing production.
4. Senescence period:
Prune the lateral buds during the senescence period of the apricot tree, leaving thick branches and prune them in winter. Cut off dead branches, diseased branches, overlapping branches, and twigs to help almond trees survive the winter better.
