2 Main types of gourd
Gourd (var. hispida (Thunb.) Hara
Differs from cucurbits (original var. hispida) in that the ovary is terete; the fruit is thick, thin and terete, straight or slightly bowed, and may be up to 60-80 centimeters long, greenish-white, with white flesh. [1]
It is cultivated throughout the country and is widely cultivated along the Yangtze River basin. [1]
The fruit is soft and juicy when tender, and can be used as a vegetable. [1]
Cucurbit (var.) var. microcarpa (Naud.) Hara
Differences from cucurbit (original var.) are that the plants bear more fruit, and the fruit, although similar in shape to a cucurbit, is smaller, only about 10 cm long. [1]
Much cultivated in China. [1]
The fruits of this variety are used medicinally, and the shells are lignified when ripe and can be used as children's toys. The seed oil makes soap. [1]
Gourd (var.) var. depresses (Ser.) Hara
The main difference between this variety and cucurbits (the original variety) is that the fruit of the gourd is oblate, about 30 cm in diameter. [1]
Cultivated throughout. [1]
The fruits of this variety can be made into scoops and containers; in ancient and modern times, many ethnic minorities are also used as musical instruments, as one of the "eight notes", the Southwest ethnic minorities used as gourd sheng or gourd silk, with a beautiful tone.
