Bamboo weevil belongs to COLEOPTERA weevil family, which is distributed in bamboo producing areas and is the main pest of bamboo. Larvae eat bamboo shoots, resulting in the death of bamboo shoots, and also eat tender bamboo with the height exceeding 1 m, resulting in poor growth, shortened internodes, broken waist, overgrowth of top branchlets, longitudinal cracking of tender bamboo and other deformities, resulting in tender bamboo rot. This paper introduces the morphological characteristics, living habits and control methods of bamboo elephant.
[Edit this paragraph] Morphological characteristics
There are three kinds of bamboo elephants: bamboo elephants, bamboo elephants and bamboo elephants. The adult bamboo elephant is 2 1-23mm long and 8.3- 15mm wide, and the male is smaller. The body is spindle-shaped, reddish brown and shiny, with black tentacles and nose and mouth; There is a big black spot in the center of the rear edge of the chest, a black spot on the shoulder and 9 vertical and horizontal stripes on the coleoptera. Oval, 3 mm long, smooth, colorless and transparent; Larvae is milky yellow, with a body length of 20-45 mm, brown head, fat and wrinkles, and light gray topline; Pupa white; It is about 30 mm long. The adult body length of the bamboo elephant is about 1/2 of that of the bamboo elephant, and there are two black spots on the dorsal plate. The egg length is the same as that of the weevil, and the pupa length is about 1/2 of that of the bamboo elephant. The body length of the small bamboo elephant is about 1/3 of that of the big bamboo elephant. There are black spots on the chest backboard, black spots on the small backboard and five black spots on COLEOPTERA. The egg length is about 1/2 of that of the weevil, and the pupa length is about 1/3 of that of the big bamboo elephant.
[Edit this paragraph] Living habits
Bamboo weevil overwinters in the soil as adults. From June to July of the following year, after the new bamboo shoots grow strong, adults unearthed on the bamboo shoots to feed, mate and lay eggs. Most eggs are laid at the top of the stem. Before laying eggs, adults bite holes in the stem tips and put eggs in them. Each hole lays eggs 1-2, and the hole is wet or has fibrous protrusions. Eggs hatch in 3-7 days. The larval stage is15-19 days. The mature larvae bite holes and fall on the damaged parts, and then drill into the soil to build a soil chamber with a depth of 8- 10 cm to pupate, and the adults overwinter in the soil after emergence. The time from egg to adult is 1 month. May-10 may be harmful every year, especially July-August. Adults usually fly at 8- 10 after being unearthed, and adults have suspended animation. Adults and small bamboo elephants were unearthed in May and June, and moved during the day, supplemented by bamboo shoots, pecked into many small holes, pecked down the spawning holes with their heads, and then laid eggs. Eggs hatch in 3-5 days, and larvae feed on bamboo shoots. After about 20 days, the larvae bite through the shell of bamboo shoots and enter the soil to form cocoons. The pupation takes about 15 days, and the pupation period is 15 days. Emerged adults overwinter in soil cocoons.
