Ip Man died of throat cancer. Ip Man’s original name was Ip Kai-wen, and his former name was Ye Yi. His ancestral home was Sangyuan, Nanhai County, Guangdong Province. He graduated from St. Stephen’s College in Hong Kong and studied under Chen Huashun and Liang Bi. The founder of the Wing Chun system, Ip Man died of illness in Hong Kong on December 1, 1972 at the age of 79.
Ip Man was talented and intelligent when he was young, but he was frail and sick. Chen Huashun, a disciple of the Foshan Wing Chun master Liang Zan, rented the ancestral hall of Ip Man’s family to set up a hall to teach students. Ip Man was fortunate to have Chen Huashun as his teacher and learn Wing Chun skills. After Chen Huashun died of a stroke, Ip Man practiced hard with his senior brother Wu Zhongsu for three years. The next year, Ip Man was ordered by his father to come to Hong Kong to study at St. Stephen's School.
