Our traditional winter solstice custom in China is to eat jiaozi. The stick figures about jiaozi are as follows:

Step 1: Draw a semicircle and draw a horizontal line inside.

Step 2: Draw jiaozi's lace.

Step 3: Draw the remaining lace around the semicircle.

Step 4: Color jiaozi, and a simple jiaozi stick figure will be finished.

The Origin and Customs of jiaozi

Jiaozi, formerly known as "Jiao Er", is said to have been first invented by Zhang Zhongjing, a medical sage in China. When Zhang Zhongjing was the prefect of Changsha, he often cured diseases for the people. After Zhang Zhongjing retired from Changsha, he just happened to catch up with the winter solstice and walked to the bank of the Baihe River in his hometown. He saw many poor people suffering from hunger and cold, and their ears were frozen.

So he wrapped mutton and some cold-expelling herbs into ears, and the ears were cured after the villagers ate this food. From then on, villagers and later generations imitated it and called it "dumpling ears" or "jiaozi", and some places called it "flat food" or "instant noodle dumplings".

There are many famous products from jiaozi in China, such as shrimp dumplings made of Chengfen in Guangdong, sour soup dumplings in Xi 'an, pork and cabbage dumplings in Hengshui, fried dumplings in Shanghai, steamed dumplings with crab roe in Yangzhou, small dumplings in soup in Shandong, jiaozi in Shenyang and Zhong dumplings in Sichuan, all of which are popular varieties.

When wrapping jiaozi, people often wrap Jin Ruyi, brown sugar, peanuts, dates and chestnut coins into stuffing. Those who eat satisfied and brown sugar will have a sweeter life in the coming year, those who eat peanuts will live a long and healthy life, those who eat dates and chestnuts will have a baby early, and those who eat coins will be a constant source of money.
