Cucumber, (scientific name: Cucumis sativus Linn, English name: Cucumber), is a plant of the Cucurbitaceae family. Also known as courgette and cucumber. The color of the fruit is oily green or emerald green, with soft thorns on the surface.
It is commonly cultivated throughout China and is now widely planted in temperate and tropical areas. Cucumber likes warmth but cannot tolerate cold, so it is one of the main greenhouse products.
Cucumbers were brought back to the Central Plains by Zhang Qian on his mission to the Western Regions during the Western Han Dynasty. They are called courgettes. During the Five Hus and Sixteenth Kingdoms, Emperor Shi Le of the Later Zhao Dynasty tabooed the word "Hu", and Fan Tan, the governor of Xiangguo County of the Han Dynasty, changed it to "cucumber".
