Profile
Before she became the winner of the inaugural "Talented New Talent" (Singapore's most prestigious audition for newcomers to the performing arts) in 1988, Tay Hwee Yock was already a household name as a top model.
Today, this top actress, who has played the lead role in countless TV dramas, has become one of the most iconic figures in Singapore's acting industry.
The role of BoBo, the vengeful gold-digger in 1991's "The Three Faces of Eve", was a turning point in her career, and her breakthrough performance established her as one of the most iconic characters in Singapore's television history.
Also in the three series of "Double Sky Supreme", Huay Yoke successfully created the role of the soft but tough gambling queen Lok Kee Fong. She and MediaCorp's No. 1 star Lee Nam-sing have a perfect understanding of each other and are the most compatible on-screen couple in the minds of audience fans and netizens everywhere.
Since the Red Star Awards (organized annually by Singapore's leading media agency, MediaCorp) was held in 1994, the universally-recognized actress has won the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes award every year, and she deserves it.
In 1996, she was honored with the Best Actress Award at the 1996 Red Star Awards for her outstanding performance in "The Golden Pillow". She was then nominated for Best Actress for "Family Matters" at the 2000 Asian Television Awards.
She became the first Singaporean female artiste to release a photo book, Huayu, in 1995, and it is still Singapore's best-selling artiste photo book. In the following year, she released her solo EP, The Very...Tay Huay Yuk, which showcased her singing talent.
In 2001, she starred in the movie "The Children's Tree" with Francis Ng and Tse Kwan Ho, opposite the two Hong Kong movie stars, and her performance was no less than impressive, with a natural, infectious and touching interpretation.
In 2002, Hui-Yu took the unprecedented step of playing a comedic character in the environmental drama "Katong Miss Oh". Her self-contained comedy made her a finalist for Best Comedian in the Red Star Awards.
Hui Yu is also an ambassador for the Red Cross and World Vision, traveling to Cambodia and Mongolia in 2001 and 2002 respectively, giving back to the community with her sincere love and actions.
