Toosendan seeds are spherical with a diameter of 2 ~ 3.2 cm. The surface is golden yellow to brownish yellow, slightly shiny, with a few depressions or shrinkage and dark brown spots. There are style remnants at the top, depression at the base and fruit stalk marks. The exocarp is leathery, and there is often a gap between it and the pulp. The pulp is soft and yellowish, and it is sticky when wet with water. The stone is spherical or ovoid, hard, with 6-8 longitudinal edges at both ends, and divided into 6-8 chambers, each chamber containing dark brown oblong seeds 1 grain. The gas is specific, sour and bitter.
Toosendan Fructus, a traditional Chinese medicine, is the mature fruit of Toosendan Fructus, a deciduous arbor plant of Meliaceae. It is produced in all parts of the south, especially in Sichuan. In winter, when the fruit is ripe, it is harvested, impurities are removed and dried. Used for mashing, raw or bran frying.
The name of Toosendan Fructus is Jin Lingzi, which is a favorite for hernia and abdominal pain. Melia azedarach is bitter and cold with little toxicity, chest, hypochondrium, abdomen and swelling pain. It is used for chest pain and hypochondriac pain, which is more common in intercostal neuralgia. The symptoms are hypochondriac pain, mainly distending pain, pain with no fixed place, chest tightness and discomfort, and it can be used equally with Chaihu and Qingpi.
It is used for colic pain, with symptoms of abdominal pain caused by stagnation of cold. It can be combined with Radix Aucklandiae, Fructus Foeniculi and Fructus Evodiae, such as Daoqi Decoction.
