Expanded Information:
The Grand Canal serves as the main transportation artery between China's ancient north and south. p>The Grand Canal has served as an important channel for China's water transportation for more than 1,200 years. After the middle of the Qing Dynasty, the Northern Canal in Shandong was silted up. In the fifth year of the Daoguang period (1825), grain and rice from the south of the Yangtze River were transported by sea to Tianjin and then to Beijing.
The Grand Canal was gradually abolished after the opening of the Jinpu Railway in 1911. By 1949, the section of the river in Shandong and the Central Canal had become unnavigable. After 1949, the canal was completely renovated, locks and control gates were built, and new channels were opened to separate the river from the lake.
In the southern section of the Li Canal, a new channel was opened between Wapu and Liuxuigang, which shortened the voyage between the Li Canal and the Jiangnan Canal. The Central Canal was also dredged and reconstructed. To facilitate the southward transportation of coal from Xuzhou, a new channel was opened along the west side of Weishan Lake. Jiangnan Canal originally from the city of Zhenjiang into the river, due to the narrow channel silt, has been changed to Jianbi mouth into the river, in Jianbi built a large locks to control the water level.
The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, as the main transportation artery between the north and the south, has historically played a huge role in "half a day's wealth, all the way into this road". The navigation of the canal promoted the rapid development of the coastal cities.
