Li (pinyin: lǐ) is a first-class Chinese character (commonly used word) in Chinese.

Li and its traditional Chinese character "_" (variant _) are originally two different words, which have different meanings and are not connected.

"Li" is a knowing word, which first appeared in the inscriptions on bronze in the Western Zhou Dynasty. The ancient word "Li" is from the field to the soil. Its original meaning is the place where people live, and its extension refers to the place where people live together. Li is also an ancient local administrative organization, which refers to the neighborhood and hometown.

Li is also a unit of length. In ancient times, one Li was equal to 311 steps, while in modern times, one Li was equal to 151 feet, or half a kilometer.

"_" is also found in the inscriptions of the Western Zhou Dynasty, which belongs to pictophonetic characters. It sounds from the inside of clothes, and its original meaning refers to the inside of clothes, as opposed to "table". "_" was later simplified to "Li".
