Lin Wutong was born in Anxi, Fujian in 1918. * * * has seven brothers and sisters, ranking fifth, with one brother and three sisters in the upper class and one brother and sister in the lower class. Father Lin Shiquan and mother Wu Wan.
Lin Wutong started studying at the age of 6, and his brother died young at the age of 12. After his father died at the age of 16, as the oldest man in the family, he was forced to drop out of school and took on the heavy responsibility of supporting a family of seven.
Because his father was a cook and a business, Lin Wutong started selling vegetables. He recalled: "At that time, I had to borrow 2 ringgit from my relatives and friends as the capital for buying vegetables." After two years of hard work, he earned more than one hundred ringgit. "Paying off the 72 ringgit owed by my father before his death is a piece of cake." At the age of 2119, when the Japanese invaded China, Lin Wutong decided to go to Nanyang and travel across the ocean to Malaya.
"On the eve of departure, my mother repeatedly told me that people in a foreign land should tolerate everything, and they should not argue with others, let alone use force. Once anything is started, no matter who wins or loses, everyone will suffer. " Mother's words were firmly in Lin Wutong's mind and influenced his life.
After working for two years, Lin Wutong began to try to do construction contracting business independently. The first business was to build a two-story school by second-hand contracting. "I have earned more than one hundred ringgit, which is not big, but it is a great achievement and encouragement." When the Sino-Japanese War broke out in an all-round way, Lin Wutong, who was in a foreign land, was very worried about the safety of his family, and his sick mother made him even more worried. So he gave up his budding career and ventured back to his hometown to return to his old job and became a carpenter.
"Although I spent seven months and seven days in my hometown to reunite with my relatives during the war, it was the happiest, warmest and most memorable day in my life. At that time, deep down, I hoped to stay and live a peaceful rural life again."
But the deterioration of the situation forced Lin Wutong to give up this plan. After the war turned sharply, he made a decisive decision and returned to Malaysia. In July, 1941, Lin Wutong once again said goodbye to his mother at the ship dock. Shortly after he left Anxi, the Japanese army strengthened its control over China and restricted the flow of people in and out of Fujian.
"If I had been indecisive and indecisive, I would have missed the last ship that left Xiamen before the entry and exit control was implemented by the Japanese army, so I would have taken root in China forever, and my life would have been completely different." Up to now, Lin Wutong is thankful for his decisiveness.
To his grief, this farewell at the pier turned out to be a farewell between him and his mother. After four years in Malaysia, his mother passed away, during which time, the mother and son never met. Lin Wutong was introverted since childhood. When he first came to Malaya, he was very shy, introverted and sensitive. He was a negative and inferior person. To this end, relatives have taken a lot of care for him.
On the way to his hometown again, Lin Wutong thought a lot about himself. He felt that if he wanted to make a difference, he had to repair himself, and he could not hide in his cocoon and be a pessimistic inferiority complex forever. He decided to cheer up and work hard. Now that he has embarked on a journey, he will do something that will make his mother and family proud. Hardware business is a major turning point in Lin Wutong's life. During this period, he got the advantage of the moon, fell in love with Li Jinhua, the graceful 15-year-old daughter of Li family next door to his hardware store, and got married with her in the turmoil. He was 26 years old that year.
"Speaking of shame, my so-called wedding banquet at that time was nothing more than setting up three tables at Jinling Restaurant in Banshanba, Kuala Lumpur to entertain relatives and friends." After the Japanese surrendered, Malaysia was rebuilt, and Lin Wutong seized the opportunity to show his talents. At that time, the British troops involved in the reconstruction brought a large number of the latest machinery such as cranes, bulldozers and concrete mixers to Malaysia. After the project was completed, these machinery were sold to the people by way of bidding.
Lin Wutong seized the business opportunity, rushed around, bid everywhere, bought a lot of old machinery, and then resold it at two or three times the price after renovation. As tin mines and rubber plantations abandoned in wartime reopened one after another, there was a strong demand for heavy machinery, so the business was surprisingly good.
entering the iron mining industry because of machinery trading is the first bucket of gold for Lin Wutong to make a fortune. In 1964, one night when he participated in the hydropower dam project in Cameron Plateau, Lin Wutong and the general manager of the dam contracting company and others had dinner in Cameron Plateau, and after drinking a lot of wine, he took a walk to enjoy the cool outdoors because he felt very stuffy.
This coolness made Lin Wutong come up with a world-shaking idea, a world-famous paradise. "I stood looking out, the cool breeze was blowing gently, and a series of reverie came to my mind." In 1963, with the support of the first Prime Minister Tengku Abdul Rahman, the mountain-breaking plan was launched.
Lin Wutong originally named Genting as Yinding in Chinese. Because he thinks that the idea of developing plateau tourist attractions originated in Cameron Plateau, silver is just opposite to gold, which is a good sign of wealth and good fortune, while the top describes the location of tourist attractions very aptly, so it is appropriate to translate Genting into silver top. However, the Silver Top was criticized soon after it was put into use. Some people said that it could not really reflect the meaning of the top of the mountain, while others said that it was too vulgar to let the name wear gold and silver.
Finally, Lin Wutong's wife, who rarely participates in business advice, woke the dreamer with a word: "Since Genting is on the mountain, you can reach out and touch the floating clouds around, why not just call it Genting?" On August 8th, 1965, Lin Wutong led a team into Genting to dig mountains and build roads, which opened the prelude to the development of genting highlands.
Building Genting Mountain Road is the key battle of Lin Wutong's whole career. If the road is not built, not only Genting's dream will come to nothing, but his whole career will also sink with it. Therefore, no matter how hard it is, he takes the lead, so that he ignores his personal safety. During this period, he passed death six times, either because the tree suddenly fell down, or because the soil suddenly collapsed, or because of the car cliff.
For Genting, Lin Wutong invested all the money he had earned before. From its construction in 1965 to its opening in 1971, Genting spent only seven years without income. What is even more difficult is that during this period, he was once in financial difficulties because of the Ganmbu water conservancy irrigation project, and his personal health was red light several times. When he invited a group of friends to invest in shares, he was also declined, and he was advised to give up his plan and even laughed at him as a crazy person.
But Lin Wutong has never given up. He is used to being laughed at by others. "In retrospect, I'm glad they turned down my invitation. Yes, I have to fight alone. But without the intervention of other shareholders, I can make a decision and seize the opportunity. If other shareholders had intervened, there would have been many people and many opinions, and there would have been many delays in decision-making, and Genting's development would certainly be difficult to succeed. " March 31th, 1969 is a memorable day in Genting's development history. The first hotel in Genting officially laid the foundation stone. On this historic day, the founding father Tengku brought a surprise to Lin Wutong: the government will give Genting preferential consideration to open a casino.
Lin Wutong immediately changed its plan and increased the number of hotel rooms from the original 38 to 211. And visit Macao and South Korea to explore the possibility of inviting local people to join Genting Casino.
Lin Wutong obtained a casino license, and once joined a joint venture with a Korean company and signed a three-year contract. But nine months later, their cooperation ended and Lin Wutong operated it alone. In 1971, Lin Wutong listed Genting Limited in Kuala Lumpur. In 1989, he reorganized his business and established Resorts World Co., Ltd. to take over the management of Genting's tourism business. At the end of that year, Resorts World was officially listed in Kuala Lumpur.
After the establishment of Scenic World, a five-year development plan (1991-1995) of 2 billion ringgit was immediately implemented, including 821-room scenic hotels, 313-room Avana hotels, 888-room Plateau hotels, 3 employee dormitories, 2 parking lots, sewage treatment plants and garbage incinerators, which greatly enhanced Genting's tourist facilities.
Even in 1997, he insisted on building the Genting First World Hotel and Plaza, which cost billions of ringgit. Many naysayers and skeptical investors have questioned why development is needed during the economic recession. Lin Wutong's response is: "In this period, wages are cheaper, skilled workers are easier to find, and building in this difficult time will help create employment opportunities and stimulate the construction industry."
At present, there are more than 11,111 guest rooms and many high-standard facilities such as Avana resort chain hotels and golf courses in genting highlands. Among them, Genting International Conference Center, with an area of 1.6 million feet and a capacity of 6,111 people, is included. The largest banquet hall in Malaysia with no pillars inside; There are more than 91 shops and restaurants and an indoor playground with an area of 511,111 square feet, which is the largest in Southeast Asia.
In order to cope with the increasingly frequent tourists and dense traffic, Genting continued to cooperate with the government or solely invest in the construction and expansion of the uphill channel after the completion of the first road, and spent 28 million ringgit to build a cable car system with a length of 3.38 kilometers, which can carry 2,111 tourists up and down Genting every hour. It is also the longest and fastest cable car system in Southeast Asia.
Genting is committed to developing into an entertainment and leisure city that can attract a family of young and old to travel and have fun. Under this business concept, Genting has become an internationally renowned tourist attraction with an endless stream of people every day, receiving more than 12 million visitors annually.
In p>1997, at the suggestion of then Prime Minister Mahathir, Lin Wutong developed a piece of land covering an area of about 81 hectares 7 kilometers away from genting highlands into a fully functional town-"Wutong Never Again": Wutong is to commemorate Lin Wutong, a pioneer of Genting, and "Never Again" means success in Malay.
