Los Hotel has not only accomplished a great deal in terms of wealth creation, but has been positively rewarded in many ways. Our work with the entire city includes programs and activities both large and small. For example, we have done our best to renovate boardwalks and have implemented a program with Miami Beach charities. We call all of these corporate activities the Good Neighbor Program (which I will detail in Chapter 6). We helped spearhead the program to provide suitable jobs for recipients of relief in the Miami area, and the program ended up helping hundreds of people by making them taxpaying citizens.

Almost every American is rooting for the welfare reform law to succeed. But the government sector simply cannot create jobs for so many people. Only business development can do that. It will take a partnership of individuals and society - one of the most formidable and important partnerships in American history.
To meet this challenge, five companies - Burger King, Monsanto, Sprint, United Airlines, and FedEx (UPS) - have formed an organization called the Welfare to Work Partnership. Work Partnership). The organization was founded by Eli Segal, a close colleague of President Clinton. The companies help people with life's chores, such as transportation, clothing and child care, and help those who no longer want to be on welfare with a variety of seemingly simple but thorny problems.
As the Los Miami Beach Hotel was about to open, we joined forces with 45 hotels in the Miami area to reach a unanimous agreement to hire people who were on the dole. All told, we estimated that the Miami Beach hotel program would provide 800 jobs for people on relief - many of whom had actually had jobs before. Of the 800 people hired from local relief recipients, about 45 were hired by us on the day our hotel opened, which was the largest number of one-time hires in the area.
According to the latest numbers (Fall 2003), 25 of those 45 people are still working for us today, and all have been greatly promoted. We've found that employees who receive workfare have better job performance - things like better attendance, better tolerance and loyalty - than those who just came in. This has been a successful experience for us. Los Angeles hotels continue to partner with welfare-to-work organizations across the country.
