Tujia area is surrounded by mountains and rich in products. It has magnificent natural scenery and rich ethnic customs, attracting Chinese and foreign tourists. Tujia people call themselves "Bizka", which is generally considered to mean "indigenous". More than 2,000 years ago, they settled in present-day western Hunan and western Hubei, and were called "Wu Lingren" or "Wuxi people".
According to records, the habit of dragon boat racing appeared in the Western Zhou Dynasty. The bronze cymbals in the Spring and Autumn Period have images of ancient Vietnamese crossing the capital. It seems that the habit of dragon boat racing existed before Qu Yuan's time. During the Warring States Period, Qu Yuan, a doctor from the State of Chu, threw himself into the river and died. Therefore, "Chu people mourn for it and save it by boat" (see Wu Jun's Continued Harmony in the Northern and Southern Dynasties), making the dragon boat race a folk activity to commemorate Qu Yuan. Especially after the Tang Dynasty, the imperial court ordered the commemoration of Qu Yuan, and the dragon boat race developed more generally among the people, which has been indifferent for thousands of years.
On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, some places are commonly known as May Festival. Folk custom is to wrap zongzi, hang sachets, hang calamus and mugwort leaves, burn mugwort sticks and go to the river to worship ghosts and gods. Public activities are annual dragon boat races. May Festival is actually the traditional Dragon Boat Festival in China, also known as "Dragon Boat Festival" and "Duanyang Festival". The word "end" of the Dragon Boat Festival is "the beginning of the month"; May and 5th have been called "Noon Moon" and "Noon Day" since the Tang Dynasty, so May 5th is called "Dragon Boat Festival". Since it is two "midday", it is also called "heavy noon"; In addition, because the ancients called noon "Yang Chen", it was also called "Duanyang".
About the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival, there are generally two versions. In myths and poems, Mr Wen Yiduo believes that the Dragon Boat Festival originated from the Dragon Son Festival in ancient wuyue. Ancient ancestors used dragons as totems, and the Dragon Boat Festival was a grand ceremony to worship the ancestors of the dragon. According to this statement, the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival is quite ancient. Another way of saying it, which is also the most common way, is that the Dragon Boat Festival is a day to commemorate Qu Yuan, a doctor in the State of Chu. Qu Yuan was a man who was concerned about his country and people during the Warring States Period. He finally jumped angrily into the Miluo River in Hunan on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month and died. People were shocked by his death. While remembering him, they rowed dragon boats on the river on the fifth day of May every year, saying that they were looking for his body. Food is wrapped in bamboo leaves and thrown into the water to prevent aquatic animals such as dragons from swallowing Qu Yuan's body. Learn from each other and you will have the custom of dragon boat racing and eating melon seeds today. Judging from this statement, the Dragon Boat Festival should have a history of more than two thousand years.
According to documents, the Dragon Boat Festival was very popular in the Tang Dynasty. At that time, the imperial court designated Qu Yuan as a "loyal and fierce man", designated the fifth day of May as the Dragon Boat Festival, and sent letters to all parts of the country to commemorate Qu Yuan, making the Dragon Boat Festival a regular large-scale commemorative festival. Dragon Boat Festival has a long history, just like the origin of Dragon Boat Festival.
The lion dance in the Spring Festival has a very long history in various places, which continues to this day and is still in the ascendant. According to records, after the Northern and Southern Dynasties, lion dancing became increasingly popular among the people, and it developed into accompaniment of gongs and drums in the prosperous Tang Dynasty. On the morning of the first day of the Spring Festival, it is often the time for lions to cross the lane, and it is often postponed until the fifteenth day of the first month.
