Chengdu Giant Panda Research Base (referred to as Panda Base) is one of the most important and successful panda protection units in the world. Chengdu Zoo, the predecessor of Panda Base, has been involved in rescuing wild pandas since 1970s and 1980s. Based on the six giant pandas left after rescue, disease prevention and breeding research, up to now, 50 giant pandas and 77 cubs have been bred, and 39 ex-situ populations of giant pandas have been established in the base. At the same time, it is also committed to panda breeding, scientific research, conservation education, international exchanges and cooperation and environmental construction. However, as a public welfare undertaking, the protection of giant pandas in Chengdu Panda Base has to face the embarrassment of serious shortage of funds and insufficient attention and participation of the public, especially commercial and enterprise units. However, the population of giant pandas is increasing and various protection undertakings are developing at a high speed.
