It is understood that the wholesale and retail trade, accommodation and catering industry is still the main channel for absorbing employment in the tertiary industry. Data from the fourth national economic census showed that at the end of 2018, 47.146 million people were employed by legal units of enterprises in the wholesale and retail trade, accommodation and catering industries nationwide, an increase of 17.7% from the end of 2013 (2013 was the year of the third national economic census, the same below). Among them, 40.082 million employees were employed by legal entities of enterprises in the wholesale and retail industry, an increase of 20.9% from the end of 2013; 7.064 million employees were employed by legal entities of enterprises in the accommodation and catering industry, an increase of 2.1%.
