In his spare time, Fry always enjoyed building motorcycle suspension systems. So he joined the Benetton Racing R&D department in Witney, then involved in active suspension development, headed by Pat Simmonds. A move to the test team followed, and when John Barnard took on the department, he transferred Fry to R&D at Godalming. When Barnard left Benetton in 1991, Fry returned to the test team, and in 1992 he became Martin Brundle race engineer.
In 1993, former Benetton colleague Giorgio Ascanelli persuaded Fry to move to McLaren. Fry had intended to continue working on active suspension systems and running the McLaren test team. But the FIA banned active suspension systems before the 1994 season, so Fry came to the race team as an engineer. In 1995, Fry became H?kkinen's race engineer, before returning to the McLaren test team a year later. At this point, rumors circulated that Fry was linked to Ferrari. Because David Brown, the original Williams race engineer, had arrived at McLaren, Steve Hallam was Hakkinen's engineer, and Tim Goss had taken over his original role as test team engineer, Fry had lost his place.
In 1997, he renewed his contract with McLaren and became an engineer at Kuthard for four full years. 2001 saw him take on a strategy co-ordination role, with responsibility for 2 cars. 2002 saw Fry promoted to Principal Engineer, Race Development, with a focus on the MP4-20, MP4-22 MP4-24.
