Brief introduction of Zhaojiabang
1847, French Catholicism built churches and roads in Xujiahui, which cut off the upstream water source of Zhaojiabang and became passive water. 1860, in order to suppress the Taiping Army, the Qing government colluded with the concession authorities and agreed to build a "military road" outside the concession. Xujiahui Road ran along the north bank of the city, and soon the South Bank of Xucheng was also built in the South China University of Technology community. Because the two sides of the city belong to the concession and the Chinese community respectively, Zhaojiabang has become a river that everyone ignores. Jiangsu and Zhejiang refugees who fled to Shanghai turned their boats into "boatmen" on the riverside, and some even formed unique "floating houses". People along the river dumped garbage into the river at will. After 1880, Zhaojiabang became a stinking river. When War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression broke out, a large number of refugees lived here and became one of the main shanty towns in Shanghai. At that time, the smelly water of Zhaojiabang in the first section of Dapu Road West was called "Longxugou in Shanghai".
