People in Shanwei celebrate the Spring Festival and start preparations in late December of the lunar calendar. Housewives first "collect dust", that is, they clean the dust from top to bottom of the house and wash the furniture, dishes and chopsticks. December 24th is "Send the Gods to Heaven". Legend has it that on this day the gods will go to heaven to "report their duties". Every family will prepare sacrifices, incense and candles to offer sacrifices to the gods. After the sacrifices are completed, the paper god's throne will be removed and burned on the same day.
Afterwards, every household began to be busy preparing New Year's goods, such as seafood, cured meats, mustard, etc. Start steaming rice cakes (sweet cakes), fried fried rice cakes, etc. "Nian Gao" means "prosperity every year". On the 30th, every household steams "Fa Kueh", which means "making a fortune".
On the 30th day of the twelfth lunar month (New Year’s Eve), every household posts couplets and door-god signs. The couplet expresses joy, and the door god expresses warding off evil spirits and ensuring peace. This day is a family reunion day. All men, women, old and young must return home. Even those who work abroad or in Hong Kong and Macao must rush back. Every household kills chickens, geese and ducks, prepares incense and candles for the sacrifice ceremony, and worships the gods first and then the ancestors.
For large families with giant surnames, grand sacrificial ceremonies must be held together in the ancestral hall. That night, all men, women, and children from each household took a shower, put on new clothes, and sat around to have a "reunion dinner." After the meal, the elders give red envelopes to the younger ones who are underage, which is called "new year's money." Married daughters are not allowed to spend the New Year's Eve in their parents' home.
