Graded reading materials necessary for English enlightenment
Parents who start to enlighten their children in English must have heard of grading books. What's the difference between graded reading materials and picture books? How to choose graded reading materials? How to use graded reading materials? This paper takes stock of all aspects of graded reading materials.

First, what is classified reading?

Graded reading books are children's books with teaching purposes and clear grades. The main purpose is to help children "read" and gradually transition from parent-child reading to autonomous reading.

The grading standards of graded reading materials are clear, and vocabulary, vocabulary content and sentence patterns are strictly controlled. Lexically, from high frequency to low frequency, from short sentences of two or three words to simple sentences and complex sentences, the topics involved gradually widen with the deepening of difficulty.

Should English enlightenment use picture books or graded reading materials? Graded reading materials are not as interesting and artistic as picture books because they have great restrictions on the choice of vocabulary and sentence patterns. Graded reading materials are teaching materials and picture books are extracurricular books. Children who are new to English should use interesting picture books to improve their interest in learning. After children formally start learning English, graded reading materials are more suitable and easier to master. Parents can gradually increase the difficulty according to their children's reading level, follow the comprehensible input principle of i+ 1, add a little unknown on the basis of known content I, and guess the meaning of words through the context to help children gradually increase their vocabulary and improve their reading ability.

Second, the four grading systems of graded reading materials

There are four grading systems for graded reading materials.

(1) Lexile framework for reading? Lance graded reading system

Lance Graded Reading System was developed by American Institute of Child Health and Human Development. In order to improve students' English reading ability, many American experts and scholars and authorized MetaMetrics companies were organized. It has a history of 30 years and is a widely used English graded reading standard in the world. It uses the form of number +L to grade reading materials, and measures children's reading ability, so that parents can find reading materials that match their children's reading ability. Reading materials that are lower than children's reading ability 100L or higher than 50L are most helpful to improve children's reading ability, and this range is called sweet spot. Usually, people's reading ability is 0- 1700L, and those below 0L are called BR, while those below 200L are regarded as having no independent reading ability and need parents' classes. The reading ability of American high school graduates should reach 1300L, that is, they can easily read Hamlet.

Sometimes there are some letters before the Lan Se value, such as AD780L, which are common as follows.

Adult guidance: a handbook for parents. This kind of reading materials are generally picture books with words, which are suitable for parents to read with preschool children.

BR = Start reading: primary reading.

Np = non-prose: non-prose articles. Such as poetry, lyrics or recipes. This kind of article can't evaluate lance.

(2) Accelerate the reader grading system.

AR reading grading system is a very accurate English reading grading system, which consists of two numbers, the year before the decimal point and the month after the decimal point. For example, the expression of AR 2.3 is equivalent to the English reading level of the third month of the second grade in American primary schools.

(3) reading guidance level (GRL) reading guidance scoring system

The reading guidance level (GRL), also known as A-Z grading method, Fountas and Pinnell reading grading system, was founded by two education experts, Gay Su Pinnell and Irene C. Fountas. According to the degree from easy to difficult, there are 26 grades from A to Z, with A being the simplest and Z the most difficult.

(4) Developmental reading assessment (DRA) Developmental reading assessment classification.

DRA rating is not a standardized test, in a sense, it is more like a supplement to GRL rating. It was developed by Pearson, the largest educational company in the world. It records students' usual reading performance, such as students' reading habits, reading fluency and understanding ability, so the results are more detailed and comprehensive. But the efficiency is not too high. DRA uses the number 1-80 to represent different grades.

The conversion relationship between the four grading systems and the corresponding ages and grades is as follows: (The image source is the website of RAZ, so the leftmost letters A-Z are not GRL grading system, but various grades of RAZ. )

Third, the recommendation of graded reading materials.

There are many kinds of graded reading materials on the market. Waves wash sand, leaving several sets of classic graded books, such as Oxford Reading Tree, Hyman, RAZ, I Can Read Series, Langdon Step into Reading Series, Big Cat, Pearson, National Geographic kids, wonders, and Usborne My Reading Library Series.

(1) Oxford Reading Tree

The grading textbooks for children's reading published by Oxford University Press are divided into 16 grades. 1-9 grade becomes the Oxford Reading Tree (ORT), which is the trunk part, and1-kloc-0/6 grade is the top of the tree. It mainly tells the stories of three brothers and sisters, Kipper, Biff and Chip. Model English and FLTRP Li Sheng Series were introduced to China.

(2) Read books rated A-Z (RAZ)

Official website is "ABC Time Synchronous Reading in American Primary Schools", with a complete and huge system, ranging from AA-Z to Grade 27, with 2000+ books. Topics are rich, such as common sense, astronomy, geography, history, fairy tales, humanities, animals and plants, etc. It can broaden children's horizons, increase background knowledge and cultivate global vision and way of thinking. Is a set of children's encyclopedias from easy to difficult.

(3) Hyman

Graded reading materials are mainly divided into three grades: GK, G 1, G2. Contents include: natural science, humanities and so on. Features: Most of the pictures are photos, which are true stories.

GK is suitable for zero basis (70 books in total);

G 1 Suitable for kindergarten to grade one (a total of 1 10 books);

G2 is suitable for grades one to three (118);

(4) I can read

The difficulty is divided into my very first, my first, 1-4, a total of 6 levels. It is not graded reading in a strict sense, but a collection of picture books with different difficulties and series. Including biscuits, biscuits, dogs, small creatures and other series, the earliest bear series was published in 1957. Most of them are vivid and interesting story picture books.

There is not much essence about the choice of graded reading materials. Most importantly, parents can choose 1-2 sets of graded reading materials and insist on accompanying their children to finish reading. Personally, I prefer the above sets of graded reading materials, and two sets of graded reading materials can be the main ones, supplemented by other reading materials.

For example, Hyman and Oxford reading tree are more common, and Hyman covers a wide range of contents, including popular science books such as science, humanities and geography, as well as classic fairy tales; The Oxford Tree is mainly a story written around the daily life and adventures of several children. Content and language can complement each other.

Or RAZ and Hyman, different themes.

I can read series can be selected as supplementary reading materials, which is more interesting and artistic, or National Geographic kids can broaden children's knowledge.

If these are not enough, it is not easy to learn other grading books, and it is usually difficult to keep up with these classic grading books. Instead of spending time studying the nuances of books of different grades, we should stick to reading 1-2 sets.

Fourthly, how to use graded reading materials?

When does (1) start?

When you are 2-3 years old, you begin your formal English enlightenment.

(2) How to read graded books

Divided into two stages

The first stage: in the initial stage of English enlightenment, it is mainly to practice listening and speaking, and children can listen to the audio of graded books. The reading of graded books is mainly for parents to read to their children, and children understand the meaning by looking at pictures, rather than recognizing words.

The main goal of this stage is to accumulate 3000 listening words and improve children's understanding of language.

Parents should make a detailed reading plan and read 6- 12 graded books every week.

The second stage: after 5 years old, when children have enough listening vocabulary, they naturally learn to spell and quickly convert their listening vocabulary into reading vocabulary. At this time, you can start practicing independent reading, and you can take out the graded books you have heard before and read them again by yourself.

(3) Choose suitable graded reading materials for children.

In the second stage, parents need to test their children's reading level every month or quarter and choose graded reading materials with appropriate difficulty for their children to read. A child's reading level can be measured by a blue score, which can be determined by letting the child read relevant test materials and recording the child's performance.

After knowing the blue thinking value of children's reading level, if you have a book in your hand, you can check the blue thinking value of this book in fab.lexile.com and official website to see if it is within children's reading range.

Or you can enter your child's blue value on the website and recommend suitable reading materials.
