Next, there are donuts of all shapes and sizes in the world. They make for a lazy weekend and a culinary adventure. Store-bought donuts are great, but making them at home is even better. Here are three different donut-making recipes to whet your appetite. Enjoy!
Method 1: Fried donuts
1. Mix yeast and warm water in a small mold. The yeast needs warm water to activate; this will help the donut dough rise and stay fluffy. Allow this activation process to continue for 5 minutes.
2. Mixing on low speed, combine yeast, milk, sugar, salt, eggs and 2 cups of flour. Alternatively, you can stir with a wooden spoon, but be sure to incorporate the dry ingredients first, then the wet ingredients separately, and finally combine the dry and wet ingredients together.
3. Stir 1/2 cup of flour at low speed at a time and continue until the dough does not stick to the bowl.
4. Knead the dough with your fingers and knuckles for 5 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
5. Put the dough into a bowl and let it rise. Cover with towel until dough doubles in size, about 1 hour. When you press the dough with your fingers and the indentation stays, the dough is ready to use.
6. Knead the dough on a floured board until it is about 2.5 cm thick. Cut the dough with a floured knife or shape it into a donut shape with your hands.
7. Let the donuts rise to double in size again, this will take about 30 - 60 minutes. Place the dough on a tray and cover with a large clean towel.
8. While the donuts are swelling, prepare the syrup. This is a classic syrup, not America's favorite Krispy Kreme syrup. Here’s how to make the syrup: Melt the butter in a saucepan. Be careful not to burn the butter.
Mix the butter with the sugar and vanilla until smooth.
Add hot water, a tablespoon at a time, until the syrup is very thin but no water is floating on top.
9. Heat the oil in a deep fryer or frying pan until the temperature reaches 175°C. Use a kitchen thermometer for maximum accuracy. To avoid a greasy smell, heat over medium-high heat for five minutes, then slowly lower the temperature until the thermometer reads 175°C.
10. Use tongs or a spatula to carefully slide the donuts into the oil. Flip the donuts over when they rise to the surface of the oil. Fry until golden brown on both sides.
11. Take the donuts out of the oil and bake them on the grill. Make sure there isn't any excess oil dripping off before.
12. While they are still warm, dip the donuts into the syrup and coat evenly. Toast them in the oven and enjoy immediately.
Method 2: Baked donuts
1. Preheat the oven to 165° C, then slowly add oil to the pan.
2. Put the flour, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt into a large bowl.
3. Beat together the milk, eggs and vanilla before combining with the dry ingredient mixture. Then mix well with the batter.
4. Pour the batter into the donut mold, filling each compartment 3/4 full. Because the donuts will get bigger when baked in the oven.
5. Bake the donuts for 8-10 minutes, until they are elastic when touched. Allow to cool slightly before removing from mold.
6. Make and use syrup. In a small bowl, combine the sugar, hot water, and almond extract until smooth and creamy. Dip the still-warm donuts into the syrup but don't overdo it.
Method 3: Canadian Fried Donuts
1. Mix yeast, warm water, and a little sugar together in a large bowl, stir until foam begins to appear, this will take about 5 minutes.
2. To the yeast mixture, add milk, 1/3 cup sugar, salt, vanilla extract, eggs, and 1/3 cup vegetable oil. Stir until sugar dissolves.
3. Add about 2.5 cups of whole wheat flour and stir until the dough is so hard that no more flour can be added. Place the dough on a floured surface and sprinkle with more flour until the dough is not sticky. Continue kneading until the dough is smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.
4. Knead the dough into a big ball, put it into a greased basin and cover it. Let stand until dough doubles in size, about 1 hour.
5. Place the dough on a floured board and knead it into shape. Break off a piece of dough about a tablespoon in size.
6. Shape a tablespoon of dough into thin strips or ovals. You can use a rolling pin or your hands. The dough should be 1. 5 cm thick. In Canada, this is often called a "beaver's tail," so use your imagination!
7. While you are kneading the remaining dough, cover the kneaded dough to let it expand.
8. Heat oil in a deep pot to 190° C. The oil should be at least 10cm deep.
9. While the oil is heating, mix two tablespoons of sugar and cinnamon powder together and set aside.
10. Gently put the dough into the oil pan, one at a time, and fry for 1-2 minutes on one side, until it turns golden brown. Then transfer to grill.
11. Use paper towels to absorb the excess oil from the fried donuts. Dip each donut into the cinnamon and white sugar mixture until they are warm.
12. Let’s enjoy it!
Tip: Remember to coat the surface of the tool with flour, otherwise it will be difficult to remove once it is stained with batter.
If you don’t have vanilla, you can use lemon.
Warning: Be careful not to get burned by hot oil.
