In my memory, I once tasted authentic pea yellow in Beijing, and later I imitated it and made a homemade version. However, peas alone seemed a bit monotonous. This time I added some tofu and yam to enhance its nutrition.
Adding tofu will make the dish softer, and adding yam will add a bit of softness. Let the baby without teeth chew them with his gums. The key is to let the baby have the awareness of chewing.
Because of the addition of yam, this pea yellow is suitable to replace some staple foods, and can be paired with some delicious soups.

1. Prepare ingredients: 20g peas, 50g yam, 50g tofu, 15g starch.
2. Wash the yam and steam it for 15-20 minutes until the yam is cooked.
3. Remove the skin from the yam.
PS: It is easier to peel steamed yam, unlike raw yam which will make your hands itchy.
4. Cut the peeled yam into small pieces and set aside.
5. Cut the tofu into small pieces.
6. Use boiling water to blanch the tofu cubes.
PS: Although the tofu is cooked, it still needs to be blanched or blanched in hot water. This can remove the beany smell of the tofu and make the taste of the tofu more acceptable to the baby.
7. Boil the peas in boiling water until cooked. Taste whether the peas are cooked. Because I used pre-cooked peas and kept them frozen in the refrigerator. This time, take it out and boil it in hot water for a short while to make the peas softer.
8. Put the peas, tofu and yams into a blender and blend until pureed.
9. This is the whipped pea and tofu puree. Because the water content of tofu is different, the mixed puree may be different, some are thin and some are thick.
10. The consistency after I stirred is roughly like this.
PS: When stirring, pay attention to check whether there are any unbroken peas left in it, and then carefully select them to ensure that the peas are broken and not to choke the baby.
11. Use a sieve to sift the starch into the pea and tofu puree.
PS: Starch determines the degree of shaping of tofu cake, so you must add an appropriate amount according to your actual situation. If the water content of tofu and yam is relatively high, it is best to add a little more starch.
12. Mix evenly with a spoon until it becomes a fine batter. It should be as thin as the one in my picture and is ready to be steamed in the pot.
13. Brush the mold with a layer of oil.
PS: Brushing oil can help the steamed tofu cake to be released from the mold smoothly, but it is still recommended to place a layer of baking paper in the mold for better results.
The mold I chose is a baby food bowl. Mommies can choose a suitable bowl to make it. Try to choose a shallower and thinner one, otherwise it will not be easy to steam.
14. Pour the batter into a bowl.
15. Fill it until it is 80% full, then smooth the top layer.
16. Place the mold on the steamer and steam for 30 minutes until the tofu cake is cooked.
PS: Everyone’s molds are different, and their sizes are also different. The steaming time must be mastered. I steamed it for 30 minutes. In the steamed state, it feels a little soft to the touch. It’s best to taste it. If it feels undercooked, steam it for a while longer.
