In Europe, there is a tradition of naming species or geographical discoverers, such as asteroids, peninsulas, islands, straits, etc., which have left immortal British names.
There are four oceans on the edge of Antarctica. Whoever finds them will be named after them.
Russian naval officer bellingshausen discovered this ocean and named it after himself.
Ross Sea and Uncle Ross are both famous British explorers. They named the sea after Ross, and there is also a Ross Island and a Ross ice field.
Amundsen is the most famous Norwegian explorer who first arrived at the South Pole. He looked for too many places and saw the sea, valleys and mountains all the way. Once he climbed a mountain in his underwear and conveniently named it "Shan Shan Mountain". On the mountain near the South Pole, facing the three peaks to climb, he casually named them after his three companions.
Weddell Sea, Weddell Sea is the name of an English explorer and seal hunter. The first to reach the Antarctic marginal sea. This is the mysterious weddell sea. A kind of seal is also named after him, called Weddell seal.
Just as most human pets are named after likes and lovers, this white-eyed penguin named Adelie was named after his wife by a French explorer.
Seeing a word like a face, seeing a name is the same. A person's name seems to have a human breath and expression, as if he is still there. Welcome everyone who visits.
Most of the islands scattered in the Antarctic continent are named after navigators. Captain william smith, an English businessman, saw the gentle curve of south shetland islands from a distance. In his diary, he described this place as a wasteland covered with ice and snow, with a large number of seals. This archipelago includes king george island, Half Moon Island and Deception Island, one of which is called Smith Island.
The straits named after navigators are the most, such as Magellan, Drake, Bering, Cook, Bath, Robert, Smith and Bloomfield.
The three straits connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean in South America are strait of magellan, beagle channel and Drake Strait from north to south. Antarctica also has the Bronsfield Strait and the lemerre Strait (Lima Waterway), which we have been lucky enough to visit. They are all named after famous navigators and explorers.
Thank you very much to our learned teacher Li Kai, the friend named Guan Shan mentioned above. I often see Mr Li Kai studying those maps carefully in the corner on the fifth floor, where there is a map of the Antarctic Peninsula.
I admire his knowledge of geography and history, which he knows by heart. The names of those grotesque mountains, bays and islands gushed out casually. He is also a master of cartography, and those latitudes and longitudes also come with his mouth open.
He took us by boat from Punta, Chile, drew a complete track map of the straits and peninsulas that passed along the way, as well as every place where we cruised ashore, and wrote down the journey in detail. The following is the track route of "Midnight Sunshine" written by Li Kai:
"punta arenas, east of strait of magellan, enters the Atlantic Ocean, near the east side of Tierra del Fuego, sails southeast, travels between Tierra del Fuego and Este sdl trados studio Island, enters the Drake Strait, and travels south.
Passing between Nelson Island and Robert Island in south shetland islands, the cruise ship entered Maxwell Bay and landed at China Great Wall Station on the Fildes Peninsula in king george island.
After that, the ship sailed into king george island's Ademeretti Bay for sightseeing. After coming out, walk all the way west along the south side of south shetland islands to Half Moon Island before landing. There is an Argentine scientific research station, which does not cruise regularly, but has a photo cruise.
Later, we went to Deception Island on the south side of Half Moon Island. This island is a C-shaped active volcanic island. We went in through the opening, circled around and came out. All the way south, across the Bronsfield Strait between south shetland islands and the Antarctic Peninsula, came to Nico Port, landed and cruised. This is the Antarctic Peninsula in the true sense, and it is also the only time that we landed on the Antarctic continent.
After that, we crossed the narrow Lima Waterway, the so-called lemerre Strait, and came to Dharma Point, where we landed and cruised. There is a British scientific research station, which is the last of the three scientific research stations in this trip.
Later, on the voyage to Will Ming Na Bay, it reached nearly 65 degrees south latitude, which was the highest latitude value of this voyage. Arrived at Will Ming Na Bay, without landing, just cruising.
After the afternoon cruise, I began to return to the south. After crossing the Bronsfield Strait, I traveled between Smith Island and Si Nuo Island in south shetland islands, entered the Drake Strait and headed for Cape Horn.
On the east side of Cape Horn, it crossed Pinqi Island, entered the east entrance of beagle channel, then went west, passed through Williams Port in Chile in the south of the Strait and ushuaia in Argentina in the north of the Strait, rushed to the vast Pacific Ocean on the north side of Gordon Island, left the northwest entrance of beagle channel, entered the southwest entrance of strait of magellan, and sailed northeast all the way to the destination port-punta arenas, ending the long-awaited unforgettable journey. "-Li Kai
According to teacher Li Kai's navigation track, I will be a little verbose about the straits and peninsulas with names involved.
Starting from Punta, Chile, we first entered the V-shaped strait of magellan. Magellan, a famous Portuguese navigator and explorer, completed his first voyage around the world.
Then enter the Atlantic Ocean and cross the formidable Drake Strait. As mentioned earlier, the British navigator Drake is both a pirate and a British national hero.
Our first landing site was China Great Wall Station in king george island, which was discovered by an Englishman Smith and named after King George III.
All the way to Half Moon Island and Deception Island. Crossing the Bluefield Strait Bluefield is a British naval officer. He saw the Antarctic Peninsula while exploring the Antarctic.
Landing in the port of Nak and cruising, Nak is the name of a Norwegian whale processing ship.
After that, we crossed the narrow Lima Waterway, also known as the lemerre Strait. The origin of this Lima waterway is a bit tortuous. First, it was discovered by many expeditions by the captain of the German whaling ship. Later, the Belgian explorer Glash was the first to sail. He named the waterway after Lima, the Belgian explorer who discovered Congo.
Arrive at Dharma Point, land and cruise. The Dharma Point was discovered by an English explorer named Charlotte, and then sailed to Will Ming Na Bay, once a whaling bay, where shackleton sought help.
After that, I returned to China, crossed the Drake Strait again, and crossed Cape Horn, the dividing point between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. Named after the birthplace of a Dutch navigator, it has been synonymous with adventure and romance in the navigator's era since ancient times, and has the horrible title of "ship graveyard".
Entering beagle channel was named after the scientific research ship "Biegel" on which biologist Charles Darwin once rode.
Finally, I returned to Punta, Chile, and had a successful trip to the South Pole.
Now the map of Antarctica is full of place names named by westerners. Knowing the origin of these names, we can understand the history of Antarctica.
I admire the courage and spirit of these navigators and explorers to explore the unknown world. I don't know when the Antarctic map will also have the names of China people.
