Because Gao Lan called this bipedal tree immortal, tofu made from the leaves of this tree is called immortal tofu. Fairy bean curd is a traditional snack in Yunxi, Hubei, Foping, Shaanxi, Xichuan, Jiangxi, Guilin, Guizhou, Anhui and Lu 'an.
The Flora of Zhuxi, edited by Gan Qiliang, records that the scientific name of "Fairy Tree" is Hibiscus, which belongs to the genus Hibiscus in Caprifoliaceae. Six-winged trees are found in all towns and villages in Zhuxi, and most of them grow on hillsides, roadsides, ditches and miscellaneous trees or shrubs below 2000 meters above sea level. Leaves can be made into "fairy tofu" to eat. Liudaomu is named after its branches have six grooves.
According to the China Tree Taxonomy, there are 26 species of Cephalotaxus in China, with plump lower leaves and sparse serrated upper leaves, with double peanuts at the top of the short branches of the total pedicel. There is a short branch of six trees, which is said to make tofu and tea.
The Legend of "Immortal Tofu"
In ancient times, there were natural disasters and no harvest. A man named Wang Sheng led the villagers to collect the leaves of the "two-winged hexapod tree" on the mountain through fairy hands, and then pounded the leaves into "tofu" to eat. In this way, everyone spent the spring drought with this "tofu".
Because this kind of "tofu" is made by immortals, the villagers call it "fairy tofu" and the leaves that make "fairy tofu" are called "fairy leaves". After that, "immortal tofu" became the life-saving food for farmers in mountainous areas to spend the famine years. With such good living conditions, "immortal tofu", which was once relied on for survival during the famine, has become a special food in northwest Hubei.
