The rivers in Wuzhen have existed since ancient times. It can be said that the rivers in Wuzhen were formed when the Yangtze River was formed. The rivers in Wuzhen belong to Taihu Lake system in the Yangtze River basin. The city boundary river is connected with the Shangtang water system in Chang 'an, with Haining in the south and Jiangsu Province in the north via Lanxi Tang. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal flows through the city boundary, with a total length of 4 1.77km. Wuzhen has a long history. According to the identification of pottery, stone tools, bone implements and animal bones unearthed from "Tanjiawan Ancient Cultural Site" in the town east, it belongs to Majiabang cultural type and is in the Neolithic Age. It can be seen that the ancestors of Wuzhen thrived here more than 6,000 years ago.

During the Spring and Autumn Period, Wuzhen was the border of wuyue, where Wu stationed troops to prevent crossing the country, so it was called "Wu Garrison". After the Tang Dynasty, Wuzhen was no longer called "Wu".

Wuzhen belongs to Tongxiang City, Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province, with Huzhou City in the west and Wujiang District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province in the north, and is located in the south of the Yangtze River.

Wuzhen was originally divided into Wuqin and Hexi Wuzhen, belonging to Wucheng County, Huzhou Prefecture. Hedong is a green town, which belongs to Tongxiang County, Jiaxing Prefecture. After liberation, Wuzhen, west of Shihe River, was placed under Tongxiang County and was called Wuzhen. The whole town governs 13 community neighborhood committees and 18 administrative villages. Land transportation has Yaozhen line, a county-level highway that runs through the town, and is connected with Provincial Salt Lake Highway, National Highway 320, Highway 3 18 and Shanghai-Hangzhou Expressway (Shenjiahu Expressway).

Wuzhen is a typical water town in the south of the Yangtze River, known as "land of plenty and land of silk".
